Gauge problem
A few times in the last 3 weeks I have started my 88 bird only to have all my gauges dead
(no speedo, tach, and the others). After driving a while and pounding on the dash a few times, they come on
What's up? Do you think I have a problem with the computer (ground or hot) ? I have also had a problem that started about the same time with the torque converter unlocking and relocking at hwy speeds. I have had to install a manual lock-up switch to overcome that problem! It's a little un-nerving to have to throw switches and beat on the dash just to drive normal. 90 % of my driving is interstate (82 mi. round trip to work) at 75-80 mph.

Re: Gauge problem
I believe your problems are connected. first i think that '88 has an electronic speedo, if this is the case they are definatly connected. you need to pull the instrument cluster out and check the printed circuite film on the back for burnt or broken traces if so get someone solder jumpers in, next check the contacts that plug into the back of the film and the contacts on the film it self. if they are dirty or black use a good rubber school eraser to clean them, do not use any thing to abrasive. I have personally had this one good luck

Re: Gauge problem
That makes sense. Probability high because I have had a vibration problem in the past with the front wheels, First with bent rim, then with out of round kumho tire, I'm thinking the connector because the gauges work fine most of the time, and the lock-up converter does fine untill about 25-30 mi. down the road then it starts unlocking. It sounds like a good snow-day project in the garage along with the 4 bolt 350 I just pulled out of a 4x4, Thanks for the info, I'll update the results after I pull the cluster. SQZBOX
