Re: Cruise control
Well, as a general idea on a 82-89 (I believe) car, you need the vacuum pull, brake pedal switch, cruise control unit (near ECM under dash), and the turn signal lever. I am unsure of how it all hooks up though (haven't got that far yet

Re: Cruise control
Didn't mean to bring this back but I don't know what it's worth but i'm putting cruise into my 88 firebird, and we'll see how easy it is. Think i'm going to do a write up too if it works. Haven't heard anyone thats done it before other than using an aftermarket system.

Re: Cruise control
I am currently installing a stock cruise system in my 87 Camaro. Here is what I have found to be needed so far:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...ns-cruise1.jpg
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...ins-cruise.jpg
So far my installation is up to $10 for a junk yard cars cruise module. Everything else came from a parts car I have.
Hope this helps, I know it was super confusing for me until I completely took apart a car and a half
- Cruise control servo - shown in picture - wires and vacuum line run through the firewall to the switch on the brake pedal
- Cruise wiring harness - runs under the dash from brake pedal to the passenger side where the cruise control module is
- Cruise module - little black computer on the passenger side dash (hanging from dash in my signature picture)
- Cruise control lever - turn signal lever with cruise - Cheapest I have seen is MDM: http://moderndaymuscle.com/inc/searc...Delay&n=253871
- Cruise control pedal sensor - goes next to brake light trigger on brake pedal - I have seen it at classicindustries.com, but AutoZone and other parts stores should carry it also

Re: Cruise control
don't forget an age appropriate brake switch (at least for me), as there is a brake switch hook up, not just a cruise switch hook up, although on my 88, there is a cruise switch hook up...but it's not in the wiring diagram?! lost there, but i got it all from a JY for like $30. I got lucky as hell, i got an 88 Firebird LO3, and i found a 88 Trans Am LO3. So mine is year/engine matched perfectly. Only difference is my Firebird is manual and the Trans Am is automatic, and i haven't really seen many cruise systems on a standard car so it should be interesting.
Also your going to want the small vacuum line that goes to the T that carries down to the ball.
That body plug for the cruise vaccuum line was fun as hell to get out wasn't it?!

Re: Cruise control
Well, I am taking mine out... I would like to get out all the things related to it also. So if someone wants to show me exactly what to take out (besides the vacuum pull I already took that out.) it would be great. I will give it all to someone for dirt cheap also.
Everything worked with no problems, the only reason I am taking it out is because I swapped my 388 in there and the CSR bracket doesnt have a provision for cruise control. AND This is going to be mainly a track car and car shows.

Re: Cruise control
will take pictures this weekend of area's and items to the system. Like i said the specific brake switch is coordinated with your year (general sence) and being equiped with cruise, so unless you switch brake switches u won't be albe to get it ALL out. just the gist that would get someone started.

Re: Cruise control
it SHOULD be the same, i've checked out the 86 schematic and the 92 schematic. you should have very similar to me...although i believe they changed the brake switch per a section of year (i.e. 82-85 no 3rd brake light, 86-92, 93+, just guesses but you get the idea) and i know there are a couple variations of cruise switches as i have seen at least two.
Camaros and firebirds will be the same, one brake switch and a cruise control switch. The difference in the brake switch is the fact that there is a plug for the harness in the car for your brake lights, 2 wires for 82-85, and 3 wires for 86+ (for third brake light, 3rd wire should be yellow). On the other side of the brake switch there is a two wire plug area, of which is the brake switch part of the schematic for the cruise control system. Not positive what exactly it does signal wise to the brain, but it's just a difference of switches per year and per originally equiped with cruise compared to non-original equiped.
Basically non cruise cars have a one plug brake switch, and cruise cars have two plugs. different shapes for different years. same with cruise switches, one vacuum hookup, and one plug, of which was different for different years. to do easiest swap for anyone i would suggest them cutting the doner car's harness plugs with the switches as you pull them, so that you can wire into your car's harness if need be if it doesn't match years.

Re: Cruise control
I have the same setup for my 87 Formula. There are two hoses on the servo, on is smaller than the other one running along side the wiring. Where does that small hose plug into?

Re: Cruise control
I believe the small one hooks into the vacuum line near the vacuum cylinder (right next to where the servo mounts).

Re: Cruise control
Right next to the servo is the charcoal canister (which I also need to reconnect). Do you mean that it may connect to that? Or is there something else I should be looking for?

Re: Cruise control
It hooks into that canister, but I just can't remember how it does. It may be a three way line splitter that it connects to. I'll check tomorrow when I have some light to make sure.

Re: Cruise control
there are two vaccuum lines coming from the servo...the larger line goes through the firewall to the cruise switch as a release mechanism, the smaller of the two goes to a T-fitting right where your horns are in the driver side fender hole. There should be a small line coming from your firewall direction, plugs into a t-fitting, of which one line goes straight down into your vaccuum resiviour ball in the fender, and the other side of the t-fitting should have a rubber cap on it. Remove the rubber cap and that smaller line from the cruise servo will plug in there. Does that make sense??
This may be different from TBI to TPI but this is how my TBI set-up went.

Re: Cruise control
That makes perfect sense. Thanks.
The canister has a broke nipple and the small hose from the servo went into that hole where the horns are. When I pulled the hose out it wasn't even connected to anything. Anyway when I get home from work tomorrow I'll jack the car up and look under there for where it should hook up to, get a new canister and all should be happy at that point.
I just wish I could re-use the canister and cruise box from my 90 parts car.
