O2 sensor location questions??

I just did a quick search and did not find what I was looking for.

I am wondering if I can move the O2 sensor in my '88 GTA from the drivers side header further down the exhaust pipe so it picks up the readings from both sides of the motor? Would this cause any problems? Why is the O2 sensor currently located only in the drivers side header, obviously it doesn't make adjustments to the drivers side only, so what couldnt I move it further down??

Any help would be great, thanks!

I have heard that the 1-wire (non-heated) O2 sensors need to be close the the exhaust port in order to get hot enough to read correctly. I'm not saying it will or won't work, just one thing to consider.

That is the reasoning, but then my 3.1 V6 has the single wire O2 sensor in the Y-pipe, just prior to the cat.

Re: O2 sensor location questions??

I cant see the exhaust being that much cooler further down in the y-pipe. Especially considering that it comes directly underneath the oil pan, with hot oil inside.

My idea was too place it just after the two headers meet in the y-pipe. Can anyone confirm for sure if this is a bad or good idea??

Ward and Al Hasse, thank you for your replies!

Did you ever end up doing this or finding out if it would work? I just did what you mentioned here and I'm wondering if it'll work/run properly. I think it will be alright since it's reading a ratio not a level but I'm not 100% sure.

if you have headers, keep it as close as you can. if you want to run it to the y-pipe then convert to a heated O2.

rhetorical question- what is the purpose of the O2 sensors?

now, let's say that your readings are wrong and the engine runs rich, sure, it will smell and get terrible mileage. Now let's look at the other spectrum and say you run too lean................

get my point?
