Wiring nightmare....any suggestions??

Hey everyone,
I have a major wiring problem and I wanted your input on what to do. I have an 86 IROC-Z that apparently had mice in it and after beginning to pull out the interior, I noticed that many wires were chewed and/or gone altogether. Now this, coupled with the fact that the people who owned this car before me had no idea how to wire anything the right way, leaves me with a mess of frayed wires, broken connectors and a car that wont start. Also, since the car is 20 years old, any wires that are left are dried out and cracking, so I would like to replace all the wires in the car as I am in the process of fully restoring the car. Is there anyone who sells a full car replacement harness for these cars? Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance
~Colin

you can get a painless wiring harness. There more or less universal so you'll just use the wires you need and cut out what you don't want (save your pigtails when removing!). That might be your only option, or just check out the classifieds you can find uncut harnesses on here from time to time.

Are you considering completely replacing the interior wiring harness? If so, the most economical way about it is to locate a donar vehicle at a wrecking yard. Finding a matching vehicle with a good un-cut or un-tampered with wiring harness, may be quite a challenge! If you do locate such a vehicle, you should expect that some wiring skills will still be needed to replace connectors or repair small sections of possibly damaged wire. Harvesting an interior harness is time consuming but easily done if you remove the seats, carpets, all plastic trim molding, the headliner, steering column and the dash as an intact whole. Salvage as much as you can, without cutting it! Expect to spend a whole day stripping the donar to get the dash, and interior harness out.

Another option is to contact the folks at Hawks Third Gen on this site. They should have it, or can harvest it, and sell it to you. Expect to pay about $250 plus shipping for it. You'll still have to remove your harness and install the replacement. Either way, a lot of work.

Been through it myself. Good luck
