Alternator Wiring

Hey all

I recently posted about a wire burnout problem I had in this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...l-problem.html

I found out that the wire coming off the gonna say solenoid is lower gauge then the rest of the wiring. The original Alternator wire looks to be about 10 gauge then it looks like they used a black snap splice and connected a smaller 12 gauge wire to the black solenoid. When tracing this wire back it leads into a rather large black split loom and I have no idea where it goes in there and then I am guessing its the same wire coming out and going to my alternator.

What I am wondering is this. does the wire off the alternator run directly to the battery or in this case the solenoid? Or are there any other stops it makes before it makes its way back to the solenoid?

Re: Alternator Wiring

I should also add that I am running a 140amp powermaster alternator.

Re: Alternator Wiring

Don't know for sure about the '88 but the '84 had a heavy black/red wire from the alt that had a tapoff splice with an orange fusible link going to the CCC system. The heavy black/red continued on its way as a heavy black wire to the battery.
Do away with that snap splice by all means! They are totally unsuitable for high currents and/or the environment under a car.

Re: Alternator Wiring

Well I discovered that the snap splice as I called it is actually a fuse, or as stated on this site a fusable link. unfortunately the link broke when it heated up so I need to replace that component.

What amperage is this fuseable link?

Re: Alternator Wiring

Don't know for sure, but the diagram refers to it as fusible link C .5 orange with a 1 orange 340 wire going to the CCC. No idea what the numbers mean. I would guess the smallest amperage available should suffice, other cars have 20A ECM fuses there I think.
I would replace the alternator wire with a continous length of upgraded gage suitable for the length & amperage, and connect the CCC wire & new fusible link directly to the solenoid post instead of splicing it into the alternator wire.
