HELP! Speedometer wont go above 40!

Ok, I'm about to take my Firebird from Pennsylvania to Alabama. Yesterday my speedo came uncalibrated, this was my fault. Now I need some help fixing it. Here's what I did to screw this whole thing up.

- I took apart my dash to get to my Speedo because the odometer broke last summer.
- Took off the needle, but when i did my hand slipped and i spun the thing all the way past 140
- Put it back together and the odometer worked for 3/4 mile and died then I noticed my Speedo wouldnt go above 40 mph and I was doing about 80.

Now, here's what you need to know. It's electric, that means there's no cable. This is definitely the Speedometer, NOT the cable. Any suggestions or ideas are much appreciated....especially since I leave in 3 days. Thanks in Advance

Take needle off, turn key forward to "on", speedo should be at zero. Reinstall needle at zero. Also, try gently prying the needle up with a fork, that should avoid turning it while pulling it off.
