Ignition or Clutch switch?

My '89 RS will sometimes not start several times in a row until it randomly fires up like nothing happened. I searched on here and tried adjusting the ignition switch (which is only 3 months old). I tried virtually every position (left,right,up,down,back,forth...though it doesn't move very much in any direction) and it's still giving me the same problem.

Have I incorrectly adjusted the ignition switch or could this be a clutch start switch going out? I've just gone through 4 months of replacing one thing after the other and I'm fed up. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Re: Ignition or Clutch switch?

I searched some threads and saw some members had the same problem. They mentioned adjusting the ignition switch or the rod somehow to make a better connection. I'm not 100% sure as to how one would adjust them and I was hoping someone else would know.

Re: Ignition or Clutch switch?

Update: I just replaced the clutch start switch and it's still wont' start 100% of the time. Does anyone have any clue as to what the problem is? I need this car back on the road asap.

Re: Ignition or Clutch switch?

As I always say, grab a test light (or voltmeter) and a diagram and trace the starter wire from the ignition switch, through the Starter Enable relay, through the clutch safety switch, to the starter. WE cannot do that for you, we're thousands of miles away. You need to do your homework.

Here's a diagram if you don't have one in your repair manual: diagram.

Hope this helps.

It's on the top side of the steering column under the dash.

To get to the ignition switch, yes.

That is accomplished by the clutch safety switch that is mounted on the pedal assembly. It has two thick wires coming out of it, hard to miss.

Hope this helps.

Re: Ignition or Clutch switch?

The easiest way to find it is to look.
Just stick your head by the pedals and depress the clutch. You'll see a push switch that the pedal depresses when it is all the way down. The switch has two thick wires, it's by the firewall, hard to miss!

Hope this helps.

ah, that's the shitty thing about the internet... you can't really tell somebody's tone. Sorry for the misunderstanding, and good luck with the clutch switch.

Re: Ignition or Clutch switch?

I'll test the starter enable relay when I get back. I know the ignition switch is getting power (I tested it before I left).
Just for the record, just because I have yet to find an answer to my problem does not mean I haven't done my homework, nor am I expecting anyone else to fix it. I do, however, appreciate the diagram and your (as well as everyones) advice.

Re: Ignition or Clutch switch?

I have a 1985 Z28 with a 5 speed transmission and I need the safety start switch that is located on the clutch pedal. The clip that hold the pin through the clutch pedal on mine broke off.

I read above that it looks like a memeber just replaced his, could anyone tell me where I can get one ? I've been doing a lot of looking from GM and other companies and they all say it's discontinued and no one has any.

Any and all help is grealy appreciated.

Re: Ignition or Clutch switch?

The clutch start switch can be bought at autozone for around 5 bucks. I may have misunderstood, but if you're in need of the clutch pedal pin as well, a junkyard would be your best bet.
