FUEL GAUGE INOP ???

well i just bought an 88 s/c to replace my 89 r/s . it has many things to fix/repair to get it my way . one thing i'm not real sure about is the fuel gauge . the needle points straight up to the heavens . i suspect an open in the wireing from the tank . i have not had a chance to put it on a lift yet to see . any feed back on this ??? yes i searched and fuses are good . thanks .

Re: FUEL GAUGE INOP ???

On my 1989 Camaro 305 (TBI) my needle would 'stick' in that position sometimes. I removed the transparent plastic window and touched the needle and it would 'unstick' and then the needle would read correctly when the car was running. I never investigated why the needle 'pinned' itself. In my case there might be a 'mechanical resistance' that causes it to 'stick' rather than an electrical signal being sent continuously.

Re: FUEL GAUGE INOP ???

I suspect you should try to read the voltage on the wire to the fuel gauge. One possible reason for it reading 'full' could be that the fuel float in the tank might be stuck and not dropping. I think there is a variable resistor in the tank that the float arm changes depending on the fuel level in the tank.

If the meter drops to zero when the ignition is OFF but reads FULL when the ignition is turned ON then that might be the cause.

If it reads FULL even with the ignition OFF then I would suspect some type of mechanical problem with the gauge itself.

I am out of any other ideas !

Here is an interesting link:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...t-working.html

They mention the wiring of interest. Note the GROUND. That should probably be checked for quality. But they also mention the voltage of the purple wire.

Re: FUEL GAUGE INOP ???

thanks for the lead camaorider , pulled up carpet behind seats . found black and tan wires intact , found faded red/purple wire with household wire nuts on it in 2 places . well i know that i'm on the right track . now if the rain would only stop . i also pulled gobs of boomer speaker wires from under carpet in that area . that explains alot to me about some other elect. problems i have . thanks .
