Headlight question

Hey,

I recently bought back my first firebird, with the idea of fixing it up. However, I am off to a tricky start. The headlights work (meaning they turn on) however they do not rise out of the hood, and there is no sound from the motor trying to work.

The guy I bought it off had a work order in the file, saying that a mechanic diagnosed a 'poor connection at the headlight module'.

Anyone got any ideas how I can find the module, and fix it or fix the connection.

thanks,

Re: Headlight question

Good luck.. these motor & relays seem to be a big issue with these cars.
I have asked but really got no good responses.

My assumption is is BOTH motors are not opening the doors it is an isolation relay issue or an actuator relay issue.

One way to test is disconect power cable to one or both motors & power one at a time direct. If they work you have eliminated bad motors.

I think on the 89 there is a relay on the fire wall that say's GUIDE. If you can get one at a bone yard for $5 or 10 bucks swap that in. Maybe you could buy 2 at the junk yard because you never know the condition of them. I have seen the relays on Ebay for $40 to 50 bucks.

Also check the fuse box, grounds & possibly dash switch

Re: Headlight question

Thanks for the advice, I did manage to find that guide box before work and noticed that there was a faint 'ticking sound' comming from the car, and when I played with the wires on it the sound stopped. On days off I am gonna have to pull it apart and have a look.

Re: Headlight question

if the headlight motors spin and don't raise its most likely they need rebuilt. the bushings inside crumbled and need replaced. very simple fix.. getting the motors in and out... thats another story.

Re: Headlight question

they don't spin, there is no sound at all, so I am thinking it must be electrical somehow

Mine do the same thing, try playing with the headlight switch I normally have turn the switch on really slow other wise they don't rise out of the hood.

Re: Headlight question

You can remove the module from the bracket on the firewall. Open it up by prying the cover off with a screwdriver. Then clean the oxide off of the connections with a wire wheel in a dremel tool.

Re: Headlight question

Hey, Just wanted to thank you all for the advice. I picked up a relay at the wreckers, as well as a passenger side motor. Put them in and everything works great! Now on to the engine and transmission........
