Alternator wires
Been a while since I been in the game and just recently got a "project" 87 Iroc. While cleaning up the past owners mess under the hood I found only one wire from the Alternator harness hooked up. The red one connected to the fat one on the back that goes to the batt but the white is just hanging there and I cannot remember where it goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is carbed and vin 'f' coded.

Re: Alternator wires
it looks like here in the haynes manual hot in run from the fp fan fuse 20a white wire out to the f cavity on the voltage regulator in the generator/alternator.

Re: Alternator wires
See, thats the confusing part. When you follow the diagram in there, both wires end up at the battery positive. I know one has to be a sensing wire for the regulator and the other should be supplying power for the regulator to use

i know my diagram in the haynes manual is alot clearer but this one still shows you what you need.

Re: Alternator wires
So, if I read that right...fat wire to the starter and then on to battery, one straight to the battery and one to the gauge.....

Re: Alternator wires
the one to the gauge seems to have a diode in it, its brown out of the instrument cluster into the diode then after the diode it turns into brn/wht which after the splice goes into the voltage regulator on the alternator, where the ignition wire splices into the brn/wht & brn at the splice is brn/wht, which the wire to the generator is a fusible link from the battery to the starter fusible link to the ignition switch which the starter has its own power wire to the battery as well. then the other wire comming straight from the alternator to the battery you will need your vin# for it, either an F,8,G or and H to figure out which combination you have.
