85 TPI fuel pump relay
Any one know where this relay can be found? I purchased a new relay for my car for it will not prime when the ignition is turned on (new problem and jiggling wires does nothing). Will only actuate after cranking for 10-15 seconds (once oil sending unit senses pressure). The entire fuel system is new accept for the relay. I went to a dealer on Saturday but they were unable to locate it. According to ALLDATA it should be just to the right (facing the motor) of the brake booster but that is where my MAF Burn off relay is. The relay looks exactly the same as the fan, MAF relays.

try this - disconnect both of them and then connect one and leave the other off. if its either or you have to get the right one after no more than 2 tries.

I have no Idea what you are referring to, I need to know where the fuel pump relay is located. It is not the MAF burn off relay neither is it the fan relay but it looks the same as both.

Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
If my memory serves me right, the 85 has a square relay for the fuel pump (as opposed to the oval relays). If it's not on the bracket by the brake booster, check underneath, sometimes people leave them lying around down there in the dirt and leaves.
The FP relay can be identified by two thick wires, one is orange, the other is tan/white. Of course the colors might be pretty faded after two decades.
Hope this helps any.

Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
It is no where on the drivers side under the hood. I suspect it might be the same as the MAF Burn off Relay (might be same location anyways) I called the parts department at a dealer and they stated it is the same exact part number as the fan relay...I will check the wire colors and post what I find. I am certian that these wires are part of the MAF burn off relay for I traced these wires down earlier for I found the tan and white one had burned the electrical connector under the I/P next to the ECM (clear connecter) and I wanted to make sure nothing else was damaged. since replacing the harness I have not had any check engine lights come on for the MAF but I did before replacing. They may be sharing the same relay. They both have the same number of Flat male ends inside the relay as well (Fuel pump relay and MAF burn off relay). The other MAF relay is under the dash on the passenger side.

Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
Alright I checked the wires going to the relay that is by the brake booster. a fat orange and a fat tan are both there along with a green/white. I have done quite a bit of research and have decided that some one swapped out the fuel pump relay with the MAF burn off relay. According to another post I read here the MAF burn off relay will work as the fuel pump relay but can cause issues if using the fuel pump relay as the burn off relay because of the resisters inside. I will swap in the new relay tonight and post up if this fixes the problem or not. I am also thinking there is a possibility that this is all somehow related. Fan starting as soon as car starts, and the fuel pump not priming now. I read where someone else had the exact same problem here but he never closed out the post. Another interesting thing is since this has been going on I have lost a tremendous percentage in my fuel economy...getting 150-165 miles per tank of fuel (not racing) where I am used to seeing a min of 200 miles per tank when I do race . I also read that the Fuel pump relay is tied to the Burn off relay as well which would indicate why the terrible fuel economy.

Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
Swapped out the MAF power relay last night with the new Fuel Pump Relay and still no prime. Started car and aprox 1 second after it starts the SES light comes on...Code 54. I wrote down ALL the relays I have under the hood and their locations. Interesting enough when the SES light comes on so does the cooling fan (fan runs as soon as car starts)
1) MAF Power 10067925 location on firewall by brake booster
Wires attached starting from top to bottom with the one way tab on top.
1 large orange
1 light orange
1 green/white
1 black/white
1 large tan/white
2) 10036933 (5017) drivers side fender near firewall.
3) 10031246 (5024) drivers side fender near battery
4) 10032973 (5021) passenger fire wall above A/C delete box
5) 10031246 (5024) passenger fender near coolant resovoir
6) 10038949 (5038) passenger side behind headlamp
7) fan relay
Wires attached going from top to bottom again the one way tab marking the top.
1 large orange
space no wire
1 tan/white
2 green/white
1 large black
I have another wiring harness which is exactly the same that I performed the following continuity tests on. There is absolutly nothing conected to this harness.
The bottom large tan/white wire on the MAF power has continuity to the tan/white on the oil pressure sender, and continuity to the tan/white which feeds to the clear double connecter under the insterment pannel on Passenger side which was burned.
continuity also to the ECM on the smaller harness which is numbered from 1 - 12
continuity on #12 top black/white and #2 bottom tan/white
Still unsure of where the Fuel pump relay should go because the check engine light came on when installed where the MAF power relay is located. but is definatly connected to the fuel system. Is it possible that the relay could be under the dash some where?

Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
Maybe this troubleshooting article might help? Especially the paperclip trick between the orange wire and the tan/white wire.

Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
Thank you for the information. I recently washed under the hood and fried my ECM and ESC modual. Replaced both from spare parts. I did not see anywhere of a test between the orange and tan/white wire w/paperclip. I have not been getting a pulse to activate the fuel pump so I wired in a toggle switch to prime. I connected it to the red wire on the I/P wiring harness (by ECM)which leads to the bottom left of the ALDL port. I think that when I get some more time I will just replace the harness again (or re-pin) and use an 86 up ECM that would work faster.
Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
I'm having the same issue with My 86 305 TPI. I've just replaced both the Fuel Pump Relay and the Fuel Pump it self along with the the fuel filter. When I turn the Key ON the Relay doesn't click ON and the pump doesn't prime I'm wondering if it some sort of Relay wiring issue. The car was starting to run pretty rough one day, the volt meter in the dash was reading low and the check engine light came on. Once I shut it down and tried to start it again the thing never clicked on.

Re: 85 TPI fuel pump relay
Unless you've switched it already the burn off module is under the dash next to the computer. The only relays on the firewall should be the fuel pump and maybe the fog light relay.
