Need help with a 92 speedometer

I have a 92 RS 305 and the speedometer stopped working. I started the car and smoke came out of the dash. After I opened the instrument cluster I found a burned resistor in the circuit board below the speedometer. After doing some research I found that it is a 3.9 ohm resistor, so I replaced it hoping that it was a one time occurrence but it just fried that resistor as well. I know that there is a short some where but I cant find any schematics to trace it out. If anyone has had this problem before, any advice would be appreciated.

Solder on a new resistor then try unplugging the spedo sending unit in the drivers side of the transmission. Just a thought

Anyone else have the same issue. My cluster did the same thing, but I have no ECM and I swapped to a th350 so the speed sensor is not hooked up?
