Pulled from another board--DANGEROUS wiring issue
I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but here's the Link to thread

Hope this has been posted by now, but if not, check your car!

As alot of you guys will know I had to get my car towed after it died on me. My rev counter and wipers werent working properly, poor idle, rough running, stalling ect...ect...
I'm glad to say that i have resolved all of these issues, but I was shocked at what I found under my dash. THESE CARS HAVE A POTENTIALLY LETHAL DESIGN FLAW IN THE LAYOUT OF THE STOCK DASHBOARD WIRING HARNESS!!!!!!
If you own a 82-92 Firebird, I urge you to go and check this, hopefully yours will be OK...mine wasnt!
Remove the underside plastic on the drivers side of the dash (not just the fuse cover, the whole plastic underside panel). Undo the two retaining screws and lower the fusebox down so you get at the wiring loom behind it. Notice the unfinished, sharp edges on the bare metal of the fuse box mount and dash support to the left of this mount. Sitting over the top of this dash mount is a large wiring harness, taped up with black insulating tape. On my car, over the last 17yrs this harness has rubbed against the sharp dashboard mount it rests on, cutting through the insulation. As a result 4 wires in this harness (which has about 30+ wires in it!) were FUSED together others completely blown. The surrounding insulation was charred and burned, in once case 12"+ of wire had melted down to the bare cable! Within this harness is the MAIN ignition wiring, heavy duty, high voltage cable, on my car even part of this was damaged and melted. No wonder I could smell burning! Its a miracle it didnt cause a fire.
These cars must have been manufactured with this harness resting on the dash mount, its on the extreme left of the dash underneath, (BIG pile of cable wrapped up in black insulation) you cant miss it! I was VERY lucky it didnt start a fire, this is a serious design fault and you must be sure your car is safe.....especially if you are exhibiting signs like my car was (a burning smell, blowing fuses, irratic idle, tempermental wipers or rev counter). It only takes 30ish mins to check and could save your car or you!
Its taken me 2 days to remove all the burnt wiring and run fresh wire. my car is idling great now, no electrical gremlins, the REV counter is working again and my wipers are FANTASTIC! Even my windows are going up and down quickly now??!
Hopefully my car is one off, but with the way this wiring is tighly coiled over the dash support, it must be bad on other cars.....so GO CHECK YOURS ASAP!!
