this is an occuring problem my brother noticed on his primer 91' firebird. When it seems that the temp outside is a little chilly...the headlights wont turn on. they wont flip up...they dont respond to anything. We checked all the fuses...good. Car has a brand new battery and his alt was just tested and came back good. The inside dome light does come on....but not all the time, and when it does come on-as soon as he hits his headlight switch, off it goes and nothing happening with the headlights. What could this be from?? It only happens at night and when its semi-cold out. Is there a short somewhere? Is this a common problem with the "flip-light" birds.?? any feedback, info or anything to help us with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot

 

anyone?? could it be a headlight switch? i kinda ruled that one out just because they do work occasionally....but the fact that it shuts the dome light off and then there is absolutly nothin after that. Im beyond stumped on this one

is that gonna solve the problem? i just went out there about 30 minutes ago and started it....the dome light came on when i opened the door, started just fine....as soon as i hit the headlight switch the dome light cut off and the headlights did not pop up. I sat there letting it run for about 3 minutes gave it gas(with the headlight switch still on) and the lights popped up and came on. After about 40 seconds...they went off. I revved it again and i could see his parking lights flickering but now fully lighting up and coming on. After that...nothing

 

Sounds like bad wiring. Could be touching your motor, thus the revving solution. Rerun all your wiring.

 

Could be a number of things. Bad contacts in the switch, loose/ bad ground. Wire COULD have rub open somewhere and shorted, but that usually blows fuses.

 

Check the relay o the firewall....It controls both flip ups.

When mine was going out & they wouldn't pop up, I would just leave it as is & they would pop up when I hit a bump in the road.

Or I could pop the hood, tap the relay& they'd come right up.

My money is on the relay, not the headlights themselves.
