Gauges not working

Ok I have searched for an answer but have found none. All of my gauges with the exception of the speedometer do not work.I understand the speedometer is cable.
The other gauges used to work but only when I was in reverse. In addition the door buzzer would stay on whenever the headlights were on. I bought this car from some punk**s kid that did god knows what to it. I have replaced all the gauges with obviously no success in fixing it. Right now I have the dash completely out as I am redoing the interior so I figured this would be a good time to ask for advice.

Oh I almost forgot the check engine light does not come on at all either....so???

Oh by the way it is a 305 tpi in an 87 IROC.

I walked away from a car once because a young man had cut the wiring--but on to the point at hand: Did you remove the cluster from the dash or simply replace the gauges with the cluster in place. I ask because if the kid removed the cluster and didn't reseat it properly, then perhaps it's not making contact.

Have you considered fuses? My suggestions are guesses. Another is that the kid did some creative hacking.

Re: Gauges not working

I replaced just the gauges and the fuses are all good plus on the safe side I replaced all the fuses....I will check the seating of the cluster when I go to put the interior back together.

Hey, is your ignition lock functioning? I've got the same problem with the light switch buzz, but my gauge lights work. The indicators do not read at all though, nor does the check engine light up; based on my research on the forums I suspect my problem (one of a few) lies with the cylinder lock. Check that out and update me on the problem.

Re: Gauges not working

I did a search to try and find an instrument cluster wiring diagram... could readily find one.My chilton manual is at work so I can't run out and look at it right now.

To understand your problem is-

All the gauges less the mechanical speedo were inoperative unless the car was in Reverese

Now all the gauges are inoperative?

Right now I can't think of anything that the gearshift could cuase gauge inop. The only thing they should have in common is the gearshift illumination circuit. If the gearshift lamp is chaffed and shorts the gauge illumination circuit out? possible only if the illumintaion and gauge cicuit are the same. I need your wiring diagram and I will more then happy to help.

Re: Gauges not working

That is correct. I checked the wire harness at the gear shifter and it was all chopped up and spliced. I respliced everything with the hope that it was the problem but such is not the case. If you want I can scan the wiring diagrams and email them to you. I have both the Haynes and Chiltons.

Re: Gauges not working

yea e-mail them to me or scan them onto this thread.. I will subscribe to the thread. If I get a chance tomorrow I will glance at mine at work... can't promise I will do that as I am at work, and in the midst of building a new Dana axle for my jeep and custom exhaust on my Z28! So scen them and post them here for best results!

Re: Gauges not working

So I was checking everything from the cylinder lock to the wire harness behind the cylinders and found nothing...so I started putting the interior back together and now the dang thing will not start. That's when I found the wire harness plug into the gear shifter has a bunch of splices in it and the yellow wire came out. So now I am waiting for a rain free day (yes it does rain in AZ....especially today...alot) to run down to the scrap yard and cut a replacement one. I am wondering if this could be the cause of the gauges not working as well as the car not starting now. I have checked everything else that I can think of. When I say it won't start I mean it won't even crank. I hear the fuel pump start to prime and that is it! So I will try this.

Re: Gauges not working

So an update.....I put a "new" harness on and BAM!!! It fired right up...unfortunately it did not fix the gauge issue though.
