Broke steerg wheel
Broke steerg wheel
New to this...but...my ignition switch was stuck, so turned SW too hard and heard a !SNAP!, now my ignition switch turns but nothing. 87' firebird, autom ,350. Good battery, but nothing lights up when I turn key. Do I have to replace ignition switch & steering wheel?

Re: Broke steerg wheel
If its turning freely its like my old V6 91 used to do, one of the rods that runs down the steering column popped off. Its a pain but, if you reach down around the bottom of the column you might be able to push it up to where it will grab back onto the key cylinder. Good luck.

Actually, it's not turng freely, was able to tow it home safely with the steering wheel as it was. Local garage says they'll charge 125.00 just on labor. That's money I intend on saving.

Try this web site for instructions in how to get to your ignition switch. It's from a Fiero web site but the columns are 100% the same.

Similar sounding to what happened to me, but I guess you have a different problem. Good article, that should be of help when I do my turn signal switch
Re: Broke steerg wheel
Ok, running out of ideas. Still get nothing, no dash lights, no solenoid clicking, no engine cranking, nothing. So I replaced the ignition switch, still nothing. Wondering if I'm supposed to have at least one hot wire in the bundle connected to the ignition switch, 'cause I don't. Does this mean my problem originates near my distributor/coil? My battery is getting weaker. I'll just jump/charge it with my truck. I mean, I am getting absolutely nothing when I turn the key. AutoZone checked battery, & alternator, both good. I haven't pulled the stater, but when I jump it, it cranks, but still doesn't start. Can barely read the fuse panel, but no fuses are blown. The Haynes manual isn't specific enough for troubleshooting. I guess next I'm looking into the distributor...but why doesn't ANYTHING show when I move the key to at least accessories. It's looking like a strictly electrical problem, but I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to that stuff. So what's it sound like?

Re: Broke steerg wheel
You obviously broke something in your steering wheel column. Have you taken it apart and looked to see whats up?

Re: Broke steerg wheel
The only thing that runs in the steering column is the turn signal and the ignition. of course cruise ect.. that applies. when u said u replace the ignition switch was it the key ignition cylinder. b/c there is on top of the steering column a ignition starter switch. It has a rod that goes to it which when u turn the key the rod acuates the starter switch. Either you snapped the rod and ur not seeing it OR. the starter switch went junk. which you unbolt the steering column to drop down to see it.
