The Most Absurd Problem EVER!

1992 Z28 350 TPI

My Window on the driver side has some sort of short in it that causes the car to stall if you try to roll the window down.

Also, It wont roll back up!!! No fuses are bad no relays I have check just about all of them. Also, the AC stopped working and the electric fans for the radiator and condenser coils.

But the passenger window and the trunk motor window both work. All I can say Wtf......

Any help?

I have never seen this in any car since I have been working on them at the age of 8....
I thought this was a Chevy not a FORD ( Fix or Repair Daily)

Re: The Most Absurd Problem EVER!

Is it possible somebody has installed some sort of kill switch somehow tied to the window switch, or closely related wiring? I used to have a Z28 that somebody rigged so it wouldn't start unless you turned the headlights on.

Does it stall flat out immediately when you press the button? Or does the act of rolling down the window cause the engine to struggle, eventually stalling, as if excess load is being placed upon it?

Re: The Most Absurd Problem EVER!

chase the wires from the window switch in the center console and the wires from the fuse box

Re: The Most Absurd Problem EVER!

It is like there is excess load causing the engine to struggle. There is no kill switch im the original owner of the car and nothing was installed like that by my father or I.

See if your left motor is defective or the mechanism is binding.

Disconnect the left motor and see if the window switch still bogs your electrical system.

Your AC will not work properly if the coolant fans are not.

So get the fans working before looking into the AC system itself.

Happy Racing!

Get an amp clamp and measure the amperage from the alternator while hitting the switch and see if the amps go up. If the amps go up alot then you obviously have a short somewhere. When the alternator is loaded down it is very hard to turn increasing the load on the engine causing it to stall. Just to give an idea how much of a load, I saw somewhere a long time ago an experiment with a bicycle hooked up to an alternator and this dude was pedaling the bike driving the alternator. There was no load on the alternator and the dude was just pedaling. They increased the load on the alternator and after a while this guy was standing on the pedals as if he was pedaling uphill. That's why drag cars run straight off the battery at the track. They say you can gain 15-20hp if you shut off the alternator during a race. Sorry for the history lesson
