Speedometer help
Speedometer help
I bought my first Camaro today. It's a 91 RS with the 305. The only thing mechanically wrong with this car is the speedometer. It reads much higher (at least 20 mph higher) than what it should be. All of the other guages work fine.
My first question is:
Does this model have a speedometer cable or VSS. The guy told me(which he didn't know a whole lot about it) that he thinks it had the wrong size speedometer cable installed.
My second question is:
Any ideas of how this would be fixed? Obviously if it's a speedometer cable issue I would get a new one, but I know very little about a Vehicle Speed Sensor.
Thanks. I'm sorry if this question has been asked before or if it's in the wrong section, I'm not real familiar with message boards.

Re: Speedometer help
Your car has a Vss. Try replacing that first. (provided the wheel size, trans, and rear end are stock) If that does not work your spedometer needle was probably moved (after someone turned back odometer). Take the cluster apart ,pull needle off shaft, turn key on so dash lights up(do not start), plug spedo needle back in at 0 Mph. Good Luck!

Re: Speedometer help
If the speedo is at least providing a speed reading, I'd hold off on taking it apart. As mentioned, check to ensure that you have the correct size wheels and tires on the car. If all as is should be to spec. (wheels, rear end & OE gears, etc.), then you may have the wrong size driven gear attached to the vss. It's a process of elimination.
BTW, the speedo is electronic. No cable.
