145 mph speedometer?

I have a Standard 88 Camaro with the 115 mph speedometer. Would a 145 mph from a z-28 work in my car? Would i be better off just getting aftermarket guages?

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

I replaced the 85 mph speedo in my '85 with a 145 unit with no problems . I got really tired of pegging the needle against the reset button. There are usually a few 145's on E-bay at any time. you can get the whole cluster or just the speedo. Good luck.

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

To avoid any electric problems with the cluster, I'd suggest swapping in the speedo head only.

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

Hey, Hank,

Maybe hit that button an extra time or two (I hate when that happens) .

I'm trying to figure out how to un-do it right now. Lesson learned!

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

Did you need to change the speedometer gear drive in the transmission? Found one on ebay for 95.00 does that sound familiar? Its brand new though

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

I did not have to change the trans gear. That would only have to be done if you were changing the rear gear. (once again I was too quick on the send button, My bad)

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

that's quite a jump from 2.73 to 3.73. Sorry, but I'm not familiar with auto trans driven gear colors or teeth numbers.

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

Thanks for the info. The car is a real dog until it hits 3000 rpms but then it only has 1500 more before it has no power.

Be aware that 87 and later cable driven speedos have a speed sensor that the earlier ones do not. Also the odometer reset buttons are in a different place.

Re: 145 mph speedometer?

I converted the car to a Carb setup and took out the computer. So the speed sensor shouldnt be needed. Thanks for the info.

I'm unsure what speed sensor you're referring to. As far as I know all Camaro VSS's were on the rear of the cluster from 82-89. At least from 85-89 (and perhaps earlier), the reset is at the bottom on all speedo heads.
