Is My Voltage Really Low?

Hi Guys,
The volt meter in my dash says that I've only got 9v when the car is not running, and sits around 10 or 11v when it is. I've got a brand new battery, starter, and battery cables. The previous owner said he'd been replacing the starter like every 6 months but I think it's cause the battery cables where the wrong kind and rusted to hell. My car takes 3 or 4 seconds to start, but it seems to be turning over ok. Is my voltmeter lying ta me or should I replace something else? If it is should I get my gauge cluster rebuilt and does anyone recommend a reliable place to do this? I think my speedo head is messed up as well so I'm thinkin to get it all rebuilt.
Thanks guys
Alex

Re: Is My Voltage Really Low?

Your gauge is probably wrong. 9 volts is not enough for it to crank well. Check it with a multimeter if available or just see how bright or dim your lights are when you turn them on.

Re: Is My Voltage Really Low?

Thanks for the info I measured my voltage at the battery and it was about 13v, so it probably is wrong. Can anyone recommend a good place to get it rebuilt? Or would I be better off buying a used one? Thanks
Alex

Re: Is My Voltage Really Low?

I'm guessing the car with the problem is your Nova since you talk about rebuilding the cluster. I don't have first hand experience with them but I do know of autoinstruments.com. But I'd check connections before sending it out. And if the cluster is for the Firebird then I'd replace it, there are enough people (including me) with spare units.
