engine stays running
i just started my engine after a tpi to carb swap and it ran great for five minutes then it stopped. i found that a red wire with a fuse had burned off at the starter. i spliced and repaired the connection and the engine started, ran great. i decided to turn off the engine with the key in off position but the engine kept on running. i had to disconnect the negative battery cable. what happened, did the ignition switch short out.

Re: engine stays running
well i guess everyone is busy, i replaced the ignition switch, same thing. since i was frustrated i removed the ecm and all its wiring, did the starter enable relay removal by splicing the big yellow and green wire. i started the engine, ran fine. i was surprised it started because i thought vats security would'nt allow it but it started.
could the solenoid in the starter be bad. please help. thanks

Re: engine stays running
Where did you tap into power for the coil? That keeps the engine running. If your coil is powered with the key off, the engine won't shut down.
So I'd start with the coil positive wire.
I'd rule out the starter solenoid because it doesn't control anything but the starter.
VATS works only in connection with ECM fueling the engine. If you put a carb on the engine, VATS no longer applies. And since you already bypassed the Starter Enable Relay, you're good to go.

Re: engine stays running
thanks fellow texan, i did have the power of the coil connected to the battery, but now i found a wire that has power from ignition on, run start. i have not started the engine since i fixed this. the ecm is out but vats is connected. i hated to convert to carb from tpi but the wiring harness was cut up and the various sensors to replace didn't justify the cost. i had a carb and manifold that a friend offered so i converted.

Re: engine stays running
You already bypassed the Starter Enable Relay which is controlled by VATS. So now you can remove the VATS module completely.
Glad you found the problem.

Re: engine stays running
so that means in the future i can buy a regular key switch and not have the kind that uses the key with the resister built in.
