Re: engine light on
all you should need to do is short 2 of the pins on the obd connector and count the flashes on the service engine light. This will give you the codes. The procedure is in my hanes manual with a listing of the codes.

Re: engine light on
You just need a paperclip to read the codes.
This page will tell you how to read the fault codes and what they mean:

Hope this helps.

Re: engine light on
the codes that came up for my car were 24 and 42. i read the meanings of them in the post above but how can i fix them so the light will shut off. i swapped out my automatic tranny to a 6 speed manual and i don't know if maybe this has something to do with one of the codes, since the ECM might think there should be a auto trans and now some wires aren't connected?

Re: engine light on
On TPI engines, code 24 indicates a low TPS reading and code 42 is for the ESC circuit.
You can check the TPS with a voltmeter. The reading with the key on should be as follows:
- throttle closed - 0.5V
- throttle fully open - >4.0V
When opening/closing the throttle, the voltage reading should be smooth, not jumpy.

Re: engine light on
also for the EST do you have to replace a piece in the distributor?
none of these codes should be from the transmission swap correct?

Re: engine light on
If the TPS is "jumpy" and not smooth in operation, it would need to be replaced. Because if it sends incorrect readings to the ECM, that would cause trouble.
It's hard to tell whether the 42 code is for ESC or EST. I was under the impression that it's for ESC but I might be wrong. Let's wait for one of the mods to chime in, they should have a better idea.
No codes should be caused by a simple transmission swap. Unless you disturbed the harness when it was already barely making connection in some places. I'd check all the connectors and make sure that they are good and tight and that no wires are frayed.
