Speedometer Calibration?

Hey there .. help please.
I just installed a 350 Carb engine with a 4 speed Overdrive Transmission in a 1986 Trans-Am. Now, the speedometer is electric, and the transmission is mechanical ... so, no speedo cable.

I bought a conversion unit that bolts onto the tranny instead of the speedo cable, and it converts the mechanical to a 12 pulse signal to the speedometer. Now, it does work.... with a glitch.

For example, when I travel at 40Km per hour, the speedometer reads like 150Km per hour ...

So, my question: Is it possible to calibrate the speedometer to display the proper speed? In other words, I want to turn the signal down.
Please let me know.

Thanks,
CraZ

Welcome to TGO. Simply remove the driven gear/sleeve in the trans, buy the correct tail shaft mounted VSS, plug it in (I assume the wiring is still there). Call the following company for the parts you will need:

Re: Speedometer Calibration?

Kewl .. this confirms the information I currently have. I was more after something like replacing the 12 pulse for a 4 or 8 pulse converter. After this rebuild, which made me pull the remainder of my hair out, I am really not in the mood for something complicated.

How many pulses per sec should I be looking at. I am thinking of ordering a 4 pulse .. which will bring me to something more reasonable .. any information on this?

Please let me know.

PS: Thanks for the welcome.

I'd think that if you simply purchase for an 86 TA, you'll be good to go. Call the experts at the link I provided and they should be able to set you up.
