Curious to what aftermarket distributors you run
So my OEM distributor is taking a dirt nap I think. I've been from 18deg all the way up to 30deg on timing in the 2000-2750 rpm range and I still detonate a bit. Everything else runs sweet in the rpm ranges below and above. I had 2 ignition control modules go bad within 2000 miles of one another.
I'm looking to upgrade the distributor and run another spark box. I'm leaning away from MSD because I had my 6AL take a dirt nap before and hear alot of the same story on those. I'm not looking to hear "My 6AL runs fine". I'm just looking to see what other options for distributor and spark box are out there. I see a few Mallory's and others that run electronic pickup but they're HAL effect ones and I'm not seeing alot of options to splice those nicely into the stock wiring harness.
So, what's out there that you have run and would recommend.

I'm using Accel HEI with the hi-perf coil-in-cap dist.(grey odd shaped coil) I have only a stock "92 motor w/Holley carb. The dist came from my old "75 Camaro. Been using it for 10 yrs. I was thinking about the summit kit that comes with dist // box // wires for my next motor.

I'm using the MSD distributor, plug compatible. had it for about 5 yrs now no problem. sorry to hear your 6AL bit the dust.
just recently, I also bought a used one off of ebay as a "shelf spare", just in case. might also use it for some other EFI project that i haven't started yet. so that's also an alternative.

When you say "Plug compatible", what do you mean? Have a model # on that MSD you're running?

Thanks for the part #. Thats the unit I first found but I want to see if I can get away from using an ignition control module in the distributor itself but I'm not seeing any choices for electronic advance and magnetic pickup.

Does your new unit come with the cap, rotor, Ignition Control Module and the magnetic pickup installed?

I bought a MSD OEM replacement. dropped right in and came with everything a OEM dizzy would. There is 1 difference in the MSD unit. It has provisions for o-rings around near the cam gear. They're on the shaft in 2 places. Apparently they provide a seal inside the block that improves oiling. They warn however if you haven't chamfered the hole these o-rings interface in you run the risk of rolling or tearing an o-ring. I left them on and dropped the dizzy in 4 or 5 times and no issues on those seals.
