Blowin' Fuses - Help, Please!

Hey All,

About a week back, my '91 RS Vert blew its first fuse, with no real indication of why. I noticed it when I lost the vert hatch release, courtesy lights, power locks, and the horn, while leaving a car club meet at about midnight. With some research, and some random fuse pulling, I determined it to be the ACC Fuse, with my fuse diagram, and the fuse block in the car, say is supposed to be a 20A fuse. I went out and bought a pack of 5 20-amp fuses, figuring at 45 cents a piece, they're handy to have around anyway. Put one in, drove into town to get oil for the oil change, and when I went to blow the horn at a friend, I had no horn. Another quick check revealed that I had blown the fuse. The original fuse that I pulled out was still in the car, so I checked, and it was rated at 30.

Does anyone have any guesses as to why I might be blowing 20's (my total is up to three now), or why a 30-amp fuse was substituited in the first place. Is there anything, or anywhere, I should check for shorts, faults, high current draw, etc?

The only thing I can think that I did differently that night is pushed the cig lighter in for the first time since I bought the car to see if it actually worked. I did, at the time, but thinking back, it was after that point when I noticed that the accessories were not working. Would that be what caused my problem?

Thanks for the all the assistance, guys!
Cheers,
AR

FUSE YOU CAN USE

The cig lighter is fed VIA the ACC fuse.

There might be short in the socket now.

Happy Racing!

Fog lights are not driving lights. They look dorky. Turn em off slow pokes.

How bout those dorks too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime!

The cig lighter is shorting to ground. Pop goes the acc fuse. Common problem. Happened to me too. Time to locate a replacement. BTW, if you source a used one from a wrecking yard, make sure you take an ohm meter to check it before you purchase it.

Good luck

Re: Blowin' Fuses - Help, Please!

Thanks for the help, guys!
I pulled the gauge cluster surround off tonight when I got home from doing the oil change ($$$^7) and pulled the connector off the back of the cig lighter. I installed another 20-amp fuse, cycled the door locks, the toneau cover, and blew the horn for a couple minutes, to try to load down the fuse to see if it would fail. I've started and stopped the car a couple times since, and the fuse seems to be holding on. So I think that may have been my problem. I think thats the first time the cig lighter has ever been used (Car has never been smoked in since new).

Thanks for all the help guys! Now I just need to decide if I need to replace the cig lighter, or if im just going to put an S2000 pushbutton start in there instead. Decisions, Decisions!

Thanks again!
Cheers,
