Dead battery

Ok so ive been working on my car in bits and peices and this weekend i put new air filter in,spark plugs and 2 new brake lights tonight i went out to see if my brothers sub box would fit in the trunk and went to hit the switch and did nothing grabed the keys turned it over and it sounded weak went to hit the switch again and nothing.

One of my spark plug wires is was broke so i took it off the plug till i get them tommorow. Would that drain the battery, or anyone have a idea what might be going on?

Re: Dead battery

No, a plug wire wouldn't do it. Either something is draining the battery, there's a bad connection, or the battery is just tired.

Battery is pretty new, when i pulled off the tail lights and did those the wires and the things that hold the bulb were nasty covered in hard dirt, rubed some off...that cause a bad connection?

and what would be some of the things i could check to see if the battery is being drained

Re: Dead battery

Easiest way it to put an amp meter in series with one of the battery cables. If the draw is more than 100MA (.1 amps), you have a problem. You could also use a decent size bulb (like a backup or brake lamp). If it lights brightly (again, in series with a battery cable), that also indicates an excessive draw.

Re: Dead battery

If all else fails, take the battery to a shop where you can find someone who actually knows what "load testing" a battery is, and how to use a load tester. I've had supposed new batteries croak in a month after installing them.
Don't feel too bad. Mine gave up the ghost with no warning in Wally world's parking lot Sunday afternoon. $69 later, I was rolling again.

Remove one of the battery cables (doesn't matter which). Connect one terminal of the bulb to the now disconnected battery post and the other one to the disconnected cable. If the bulb lights brightly with everything off, it means excess current is being drawn.
