87 IROC starting issues (on and off)

My IROC started to have starting issues the past 2 months. Some days she would fire right up when I turn the key.. and the other days it would try and crank over in which I would give it gas and it starts. I recently replaced the starter since I was told at an oil change shop that my starter was going bad. I replaced the starter with a "worldwide" starter from auto advanced parts. It started up beautifully. Actually better than when I first acquired the car back in January of this year. It started up quietly with no issues for the first few days with the new starter in it. Now the car is back to where it was once again. It would struggle to crank over in which I would have to give it gas to get it going. Once I apply the gas, the car runs fine. What is causing this? Could the new starter have crapped out already? I did a search and am still confused about all the other possibilities there may be to this happening.

Gentlemen, . . . . . . . . .

A good starter motor will crank the engine about 250 RPM with 9 volts.

Take measurements to determine if it’s up to spec.

When you see fog lights on in good weather beware. Low performance driver ahead. Right grandma?

How bout those nervous nellies too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime or if there is a little rain!

Does the starter need to be tested while its pulled out of the car or installed?

Installed.

For accuracy monitor the voltage and engine RPM with external instruments.

I took the car to auto advanced parts and had them test everything. It showed everything to be normal. Not sure if the guy knew what he was doing. Any other advice on what to do?

I had similar issues and also changed out the starter... ect... ect... Turned out to be the fuel pump relay > $20.00 part. Just one of many possibilities.

Hmm.. That's an idea. I had a feeling it was fuel pump related. Where is the fuel pump relay located under the hood? Is it next to the cooling fan relays on the drivers side firewall?

The fan relay is located in the engine compartment on the firewall, near the brake booster. It’s the relay nearest the booster.

Re: Gentlemen, . . . . . . . . .

Thanks guys. I replaced the relay with another one that was new that I had on hand. It seemed to help a little but not much. I checked the fuse also near the battery and it checked out good. What other options are there as far as troubleshooting this? Would the oil pressure switch have anything to do with it? I checked for codes and I am not see anything. It flashes once.. pause then flashes twice. That's all I am seeing.

My SES light came on yesterday while on the way to work on the hwy. I checked the code and it shows a code 32. Would this be a factor?

Probably not.

32 is usually EGR.

If it takes too long to start the 2 leading causes is lack of spark or fuel.

Monitor both while cranking.

I took it to a shop the other day to have it inspected for the issues I was experiencing. The fuel pump tested good. They however saw that my alternator was not charging like it should. This is the 2nd time I replaced a 105 amp alternator from advanced auto in 6 months. I'm wondering if a 140 amp will help or is that overkill?
