Gas gauge doesn't read correctly

Hey everybody so I bought an '85 IROC back in August and the gas gauge has never worked right. It always reads full but whenever my tank gets low and I go around a sharp turn or brake really fast, the needle moves all the way to the bottom then goes back up. This leads me to believe it's a bad sending unit but I want to make sure before I go and drop my entire rear end. Does anybody know if it's the sending unit or perhaps some other electrical issue?

it's a good question...mine has the opposite problem... it never says full, only about 3.4th full, and it will look almost empty with 1/2 a tank of gas left

Re: Gas gauge doesn't read correctly

From what I've seen on my many other vehicles, 99% of the time its the sending unit!!!

On my 98 Ranger, I was able to replace the electronic part (that works with the float) on the sending unit that was causing my problem. Lucky me, I didn't needed to replace the whole thing!(sending unit).

So, your problem, Pump=good, Electric Float=bad.
