Newbie intro and electric question ( i think i found a mess!!)

Hey everyone ive been on here a while but finally own my own iroc after wanting one since i was a kid. I have a 1988 Medium Orange iroc 5.7

Car is what you would expect for 21 years old, there is one main problem. The car dies every now and then from what seems to be lack of gas. So while running i touched the fuel pump relay and the car stalled, started again and ever so lightly touched the wires coming out of the fuel pump relay and car stalled. So my question is why on earth would anyone splice into the orange wire coming out of the fuel pump relay and run it over towards the coil, and also (in case it hase something to do with this) why would the 4 wires coming off the top of the coil be cut and spliced.

I understand these cars get mutilated sometimes and there could be tons of reasons but just throwing it out there.

Thanks in advance
John

Welcome to the board. I have been a camaro guy since I was little and I have the pleasure of owning two camaros.

As far as your wiring goes, people do many stupid things to their cars when it comes to wiring. The orange wire on the fuel pump relay is hot all the time so they probably needed battery power to something. Unfortunately, this is not the right way to do this but it is your mess to deal with now. You really need to invest in a shop manual for your car so you can see what wires go where and the color that is associated with them. GM used the same color wires for many years but it can be a little confusing when trying to fix somebody elses mess.

As far as the coil splicing, I couldn't begin to tell you why this is done. the only reason to splice anything on the coil would be for the tach signal. Again, you need to start fishing wires and get this taken care of so you can enjoy your car trouble free.

P.S. - try posting a pic of what your looking at under the hood so we can have a better idea of what your trying to describe.

Welcome! Hey before you drive your car, make sure all those "spliced" wires are all taped up good. You don't want a short anywhere there.

Re: Newbie intro and electric question ( i think i found a mess!!)

Thanks for all your help, it is tough to drive the car because everytime i hit a bump that frayed fuel pump relay wire must disconnect and the car stalls. My tach stays pinned at all times so that must be because of the mess by the coil. I bought a manual , helps alot, but this is quite a mess. Hopefully i can poke around on here and find someone in south jersey who knows more about the wiring.

Can you at least fix those spliced wires? Can you make sure there are good connections in them?

Yes i have gone through and made all the connections tight, the orange wire at the fuel pump is coming out of the metal pin inside the plug so i will have to "rebuild" the plug to the relay i assume. That will stop any running issues as the car runs fine but just stalls when it looses the fuel cause of that wire. Then its on to getting my tach functional again.

How long ago did you change the fuel filter? If it feels like no gas it could be the filter.

i have not changed it, i def should but i got away from that once i found that while idling if i just tap the fuel filter relay it would lean out and stall. I agree its an easy thing that should be changed.

Damn right it's an easy thing to change that should be changed, not only should you change it but it's easy as **** and takes no more than 10 mins, and those 10 mins could save you from a far more expensive problem.

I had a similar problem, got my filter changed and surely that was the problem. When I spilled the gas out from the old filter that thing was dirty as ****, good thing I changed it.
