alternator problems?

ok, so im new to this site, and to the camaro as well. i just traded my truck for a 92 rs about a month ago. its a 305 tbi with a 5 speed tranny. its an odd problem, when i drive around town i use only 4th gear, 5th seems low and the car runs and starts fine, but when i drive it on the freeway and use 5th, it seems if the car stalls (which it did the other night) it doesnt want to start, like its a dead battery. whats odd though is it did it a couple weeks before as well and i wasnt driving it on the freeway, it was after 5 minutes of driving. its just an odd problem, and the battery seems okay, it holds a charge, and i have a msd ignition box too, idk if that makes a difference or not, also when im driving (and this may be a seperate problem, idk) it kinda bucks like it has a miss but it hits it now and then. i havent done much in the way of troubleshooting yet as its about 10 degrees where im living right now, and the alternator looks pretty new too, but im thinking theres something wrong with the wireing or its not producing enough amps at a low rpm. any ideas would be helpful, and this weekend i plan on having the alternator and battery tested, so ill update when i do that, but im just trying to get some ideas before i troubleshoot so im not just throwing parts at it and hoping for the best. but thanks in advance and ill post if i think of anything or rule anything out.

thanks, ryan

Re: alternator problems?

sounds like a bad MSD or module in the bottom of the distributor, or a bad plug wire causing high voltage feed back killing the module. I have seen the cond on a point system cause the same problem, if that helps you understand things. also in the '90's pickups the distributor would get magnatized and cause the pickup in the bottom of the distributor to act really bad, in which case the only cure was a new distributor. P.S. unless you are racing, MSD is not a good investment, (just my opinion).

Re: alternator problems?

ya i know msd doesnt do anything for me, but it came already installed on the car when i got it and they hacked the factory harness to put it on. i would prefer to go back to factory as my tach doesnt work anymore either, but, it is what it is, maybe in the spring ill try to find a new harness for it at a local junk yard. i dont believe the plug wires are bad, they look pretty much new but ill do some checking, ill try to get a new dizzy sometime soon. but do you think that could cause my battery to die after driving for a while?

Re: alternator problems?

i use all the gears, i just use 1-4 in the city at lower speeds and 5th on the freeway, it would be kinda hard to start in 4th gear without bogging out

Re: alternator problems?

the second problem sounds like what my brothers 85 Monte carlo was doing...it was due to a clogged cat from the engine burning it up and bad fuel filter..just a suggestion

first i planned to get the free check, why pay for something you dont have to, thats what i was referring to in the first post, and secondly, i didnt mention this cause i didnt think of it, but the car has no cat, and i believe the fuel filter is okay cause it seems to run rich. the exhaust on the car consists of the y pipe to a pipe connected to a cherry bomb then thats it, ends under the passenger seat roughly. not at all what i want and i know its prolly not good to do that, but again, thats how i recieved the car. so im also in the market for a full exhaust, headers back, but probably in the spring when its warmer and i can afford it. i do appreciate the feedback though that i have recieved
