hatch wont close car wont start
I went to shut the hatch two days ago, and it was as if it wasn't catching to close. The power that pulls the hatch close continued to run and finally now the car won't start. I attempted to charge the battery today... the radio worked and the lights turned on...but the engine won't start. I also noticed the hatch continued to run as if it was trying to close. what do i do to fix this

When you say it won’t start do you mean it cranks but won’t fire or you don’t hear the solenoid click.

Car Isn’t Cranky, So I Am
Using long wires so you can bring a voltmeter into the cockpit, connect the meter between ground and the solenoid terminal.
When trying start the car observe and report the voltage.

How bout those nitwits too scared to drive without headlights in the daytime,
and the nitwits that need headlights for a little rain

Disconnect the hatch motor with the motor about halfway up, and charge your battery. I had the same problem with the power antenna on my '93 Grand Prix (which had a sensitive battery anyways... if I left the door or hood open for 5 minutes it was dead, even with another battery, but that's another thing altogether). I plugged the motor in, it got the antenna about halfway in one direction, and froze, not engaging the built-in cut-off switch.
Re: hatch wont close car wont start
My hatch motor does the same. It will just keep running, as if it's not catching the hatch latch, so, I said screw it, and just unplugged it. I guess slamming the hatch closed won't do any damage, and if it does, big deal.
Oh well, just less wires for me. Hatch motors were optional equiptment, so I imagine there's no harm at all in slamming the hatch shut. Unless you're going for a completely original car, that's fully optioned, I'd rip the hatch motor out.
In the end, it just means less to go wrong!

Hatch keeps running = broken gear nut. Here is what you need.

Download the instructions for the 101170 aftermarket guides from the lower left side of my site under "Documentation" or the tech article I wrote on repairing the hatch pull-down unit that is posted on thirdgen.org.

Re: hatch wont close car wont start
You can also convert to a manual hatch as I did. Don't get me wrong, the motorized version is great, but after 2 motor casings i've had enough of spending money on them.
The hatch can also be converted to manual with all of the parts you have now. For me it was a free mod, and works just like the 4th gen hatches. Push down to close, and it latches. Even the button on the dash is retained.
