120 Speedometer???

Hello everyone!

I'm considering buying a 1989 Trans Am. However, the speedometer only goes up to 120. I thought that the speedo in these cars went to 140... anyone have any input?

Re: 120 Speedometer???

Thanks!

So... if I'm looking at a 1989 Trans Am with a 120 MPH speedo on it, it is not the original speedo... correct?

Re: 120 Speedometer???

I do believe its a real T/A, but perhaps the speedo was changed to show a lower mileage? The only thing is that this car looks really nice. The front end was repainted to fill the license plate holes and the spoiler was replaced to correct the cracking that was common with them. There is some minor surface rust on some of the suspension parts, and the overall condition of the car is in line with the stated mileage. Also, the autocheck report does not show any problems with the reported mileage on the car over the years.

Is it possible that the 140 speedo was part of an optional package on the car?

Here is the link to ebay listing.

Re: 120 Speedometer???

Thanks everyone.

I think I figured it out. According to a press release by Pontiac for the 1988 model year, the Trans Am came standard with a 5.0 V8, Throttle Body Injection, and a manual transmission. This set up came with a 120 MPH speedometer. The optional automatic transmission came paired with the Tuned Port Injection V8. This set up came with the 140 MPH speedo.

I found this info in a book titled "High Performance Firebirds: 1982 - 1988"

Thanks everyone for your help!
