91 Camaro RS High Beam Issue

Well, seems that my switch in the column has gone out. I have found the actual switch and the bar at the bottom. I can trigger the switch down there and it will turn on my high beams, however the arm in the column will not. I was wondering, what wires would I have to tap into on the actual switch, to install a toggle or push button switch on my dash so I can finally have high beams?

Also, would any toggle or push button switch work for this?

O.K. , as you can see by my sig. i have the exact same car as you . if you can trigger the switch by hand the switch is good . what has happened after 20yrs. of flipping beams the adjustment has slipped . there are 2 bolts/screws ( 7mm i think ) that hold the switch in position . loosen them a fraction , slide switch up the steering shaft enough to remove slop , tighten screws . FINI . i know it sounds too simple , but it is . good luck .

Re: 91 Camaro RS High Beam Issue

Thank you. I'll try that in the morning. However, I believe the last time I took a look at it, a couple years ago, it seemed more like it might be broken in the column. But I will try your suggestion first.

Bright Idea

You should buy new parts and repair it but if you’re on a budget you can use a single pole double throw toggle; SPDT.

Connect the
yellow wire coming out of the pull-for-on switch to the center of the toggle.

Connect the
tan wire going the headlights (which should find in the column connector) to one end of the toggle.

Connect the
light green wire going the headlights (which should find in the column connector) to the other end of the toggle.

You should add in-line fuses to any new wires you install.

You can orient the toggle so high beams is the high position of the toggle.

Happy Racing!

That's weird,....I just came into the exact same problem with my 91 RS as well. I turned my high beams on the other night but they wouldn't turn off. The next day I went out there and wiggled the turn signal lever back and forth and got them to go off. BUT,.....yesterday I installed some new H4 low beam headlights, and then I tried the high beams again only to have them get stuck on again. I actually had to unplug the high beams because they would not go off and I had to drive my car last night.

So, I guess I'll go out there and try doing what you suggested and see if that works. Actually I think I have much bigger problems than that though. My cruise control doesn't work either. One thing I noticed when I bought the car, was that the wires were all exposed on the side of the column. Something tells me that I'm going to need a new switch/lever.

Re: 91 Camaro RS High Beam Issue

Well I went out and looked. I cannot find these bolts you are talking about, to loosen it and then move the switch. I see the switch, and tons of wires. I may end up just installing the toggle switch, or push button. Wouldn't need one for the low beams, as the actual light switch works perfect, just the dang high beams. I would love to afford to replace the entire thing, but trying to save money to buy a new engine. My 91 Maro RS just hit 305K miles last night, on the original motor. Don't know how much longer I can push it.

Re: 91 Camaro RS High Beam Issue

Hi, My car is pretty much just like yours also. When I first started having this problem I found out by tilting the column up a notch (assuming yours tilts) adjusted the rod better so it worked more often. Eventually adjusted the switch by lowering the column a bit and looking down the top side. From that angle the screws are at about ten o'clock going in left to right. Yeah, 7mm. Good luck

if you did not find the adjustment bolts/screws you did not look good enough . they are above the switch , above & below on the steering column . it also helps to lower steering column & gain access unless you have small hands . i have done this several times on my & friends cars , it works . good luck .

Re: 91 Camaro RS High Beam Issue

For all those with this problem, replacing the switch will not solve the issue. The issue is the switch pushes a metal rod that runs down the steering column that pushes a button near the bottom. This button is held on on top and on bottom by bolts in adjustable rails. Over time, this switch slides down the adjustable rails and the leaver no longer pushes the rod far enough to click the button.

Heres what you need to do:
1: Remove kick-panel
2: Unbolt the 2 bolts holding your steering column up and drop the column enough to see down the top of it.
3: Find to the left side a metal rod that runs down its length. This is pretty obvious.
4: follow it to find the button. Its a small white box with a cup on the front. This is your button switch, and the problem. If you can push this manually with the rod/finger and it works, dont go replacing anything.
5: about half an inch above and below the actual cup on the button are two bolts. You will probably not be able to see them, but you can feel them with your hand if you reach from your pedal area behind all the components. I had enough space to get my entire hand if you go from underneath as opposed to reaching down from the top of the wheel column.
6: loosen the bolts slightly, slide the switch itself forward until the slack is gone, and tighten it. I used a small socket for this, It was either 8 or 10mm if my memory serves right.

Its a very tight space, and you will need a flashlight.

have you figured this out yet? We just got a 91 z28 for a "fun" project and ive been working on trying to figure out the high mean issue and EVERYBODY keeps saying to adjust the switch down under the dash but im seeing that every one has the problem at the column and not at the switch and I have yet to see anyone post a fix to this. I can get the high beams to come on if I push on the rod but the problem is where ever the rod is supposed to be connected at the colums....is broken. Do you have any idea where it hooks or what? Is it just a piece of plastic that breaks after a while?
any info would be helpful because I see nothing for it to hook to
thanks!

Re: 91 Camaro RS High Beam Issue

same here i had the same problem. i dropped the column adjusted the switch and worked fine. but today i put in my new dash pad and i tilted the steering wheel down to get to some of the bolts and somehow the rod came loose on the turn signal lever i guess. the rod doesnt even move when i pull the switch back. does anyone know where this goes or connects to?
