VATS security light coming on but,
I have a 2000 Z28, and the security light has come on, and stays on...
The thing is, the car starts and runs fine... Usually when the light comes on, the car won't start due to vats, and that's typically because your key or the contact in the column gets warn down, but i've never had that problem with this car... i did however have it with my old ws6.
anyway, i don't know wtf to do, a guy is supposed to be buying this car sunday, and the frakin light came on and wont go away.
i had the codes scanned and cleared, and it still comes on..
what do i do?? i need help as quick as i can get it. I suppose i can disable the vats but i don't trust that it would help much...
Can anyone send me a link to someplace that has instructions as to how to how to disable it IFFFFFFF they think that's the only option?????
if there are other options please let me know // aside from pulling the dashboard apart and unplugging the light..
so i guess let me re-phrase that...
simple solutions??
ideas as to what's causing it??
thanks in advance!!

Did you disconnect the battery to clear the codes, or did a scan tool clear them?
Has there ever even once been a VATS no-start issue that you can remember?

Re: VATS security light coming on but,
Last question first, come to think about it, it has happened a few times, but it's been a long time now since it has, and since then i put the key in much more delicately and have not had the problem since, not that i ever slammed the key into the ignition to begin with, but i'm probably the 3rd or 4th owner of that car so who knows.
first question, scan tool took the codes out, and, i thought about the battery thing, but did not do it. I called the dealership earlier today to see if they would be open tomorrow since i'll have to have the stereo code put back in.. They will be, so i will go out and disconnect the battery and check that out.. im sure it will work if not maybe temporarily....
Re: VATS security light coming on but,
What codes were reset?
Is your security light on or the SEL (Service engine lamp)
I've got a 99Z, and to be honest, I didn't know these cars had a "security light"

Re: VATS security light coming on but,
I did a little digging for ya, and came up with this:
http://shbox.com/1/pass_key.html
This is geared towards the LT1 cars, but all should be the same except perhaps schematics/wiring.
Hope this helps!

Re: VATS security light coming on but,
Not sure it's the same thing - but I found online directions for reprogramming the key fobs and such for my 1997.
Didn't know you had to have the dealer do anything if the battery was disconnected.
Sounds like your having the same issue I had in the 1997 - the small contacts inside the key cylinder have springs behind them that wear out, and then the key starts not making contact correctly and start having issues. I followed the same directions as for the 3rd gen cars and bypassed the VATS on my 1997 as it got to the point that it just didn't want to start anymore.

Re: VATS security light coming on but,
thx guys...
as for the dealership, the stereo takes a specific code, so if you disconnect the battery, your radio is useless until you get a dealership to call chevy and get the code for that specific stereo via my vin number and some crap the stereo outputs.. so if i want a stereo, i have to go to the dealership..
as for the vats thing, i still haven't gone out to disconnect the battery, but, as for the key, it seems to be working considering the car starts.... if it was vats itself, i'd think that the car wouldn't run at all... i'll let you guys know if the battery disconnect worked, and will check out the links sent... thx guys

Re: VATS security light coming on but,
well, i was going to unplug the battery, and have the stereo reset, one dealership was going to charge me 125 dollars to reset my frakin stereo!!!!!!!!
but even then, they would have to call GM to get the code and their closed saturdays, so i went to another just in case and they said they would do it for free, but it still stands that gm is closed, so, i'll have to sell the car with the security light on..... oh well......

Re: VATS security light coming on but,
I've disconnected the battery on my 99Z28 many times, never had to have the radio reset. It has the factory alarm with the Monsoon system/cd changer.
Still think it is your vats. You car will start and run it the Vats stopped working while it was running. Lots of info about it in the link I gave in post #6.
Oh well, good luck to ya, I'm getting ready to get on a plane to Brazil, won't be back online 'till Mon or Tues.
