89 formula VATS?

I have an 89 formula 305 ws6 5 speed, the car was running great and when i went to go to work one day it wouldnt start. So I relaced the battery, starter and the alternator. The car ran fine for a few weeks, until it started doing it again I noticed the security light was staying on and if i let it sit and tried it every few minutes it would sometimes go off and the car would start right up. The problem kept getting more and more common so i stopped driving it until i could figure it out. Now the light stays on and will not turn off, also something is draining my new red top battery while it sits. I disconected the radio and all lights go off when car is off so they are not drawing power. So any ideas would be helpfull, i think its the vats after doing some research if anyone knows how or has a link to just remove or bypass the vats system I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Re: 89 formula VATS?

This is a common problem even if you replace the vats parts they will fail again. Goto http://www.pcmforless.com/index.php?...128&Itemid=341 and get a replacement chip they will need some info when you fill out the order so pull your ECM and read the sticker on it. They will program your new chip so that the computer wont even look for vats, you can then run regular keys and never have to worry again.

Thank you! I will try that and hopefully it wont happen anymore. Any ideas on the battery being drained while the car is parked?

I happen to have a vats bypass kit that I will sell to you for $10. it has all the possible resisters for your car.

Not a proper solution. A permanent proper solution is buying a reprogrammed chip.

The Resistor trick and the other so-called Bypass Kits are focused on reproducing the input signal to mislead the TDM (the brain of GM anti-theft systems) in thinking the right key is in the lock cylinder. This is obviously the wrong approach in our case because it doesn’t bypass the TDM itself, but instead still fully relies on it to produce the output signal to enable injectors and starter motor.

I suppose that if there was a faulty component than no my kit would not be the solution.... but it depends if the resister on the key went bad or the actual vats component went bad.

Re: 89 formula VATS?

Since you have the key, you know the resistor value. Might as well try a $1 resistor from Radio Shack and see if it solves the problem. https://www.thirdgen.org/vats Saves time, money, etc. and only takes 5 minutes to do.

If you can find the resistance particular to your key I will send you the resister you need for free.

Re: 89 formula VATS?

I used a potentiometer to get the correct resistance in my VATS system. But still want to fully bypass the TDM.
