Ok so im trying to restore a 1989 Iroc-z for my first car, im slowly fixing things up one by one but a problem i ran into after i recently took it out on a night drive, is that the brights dont work, after looking into it and seeing that neither of the brights work on it and the turn signal stick doesnt click or stay back after i pull it to bring on the brights, i think its a problem in the Steering collumn, but i would perfer a more experienced opinion than mine and my uncles. What do you guys think?

 

you need to put dimer switch on your steering cloumn!!! lol don't feel bad i got head light problem's to...

 

Lol ok, ill look into it, this is pretty much my first real experience with car and ive been going off of finding stuff on here and what my uncles suggest

 

When you pull the turn signal lever back, it pushed a rod that actuates a switch farther down your steering column. The switch mounts with two bolts and slotted holes for adjustment. They eventually become loosened enough to slide down and no longer work. If you have a tilt column, try tilting the wheel all the way up and try switching between beams and it may work. After you remove the panels under the steering wheel you can follow the rod and feel where the switch is.If you can push in on the front of the switch and get it to work, all you need to do is loosen the two little bolts( small 7mm socket or wrench), slide the switch up until no slack, retighten and test. You should tighten it down with the steering wheel tilted in the position you always drive in. Button up and its done

 

i have the same problem, i have been head first in there but i could never find the bolts your talking about. where exactly are they?

 

this may sound cheap but it worked for me going on several years. i found the high beam switch on the column and couldnt get the little bolts loose. there was just enough play where i was able to get the tip of the rod out. i dropped a "bb" from a bb gun n there and slipped the rod back in. it took out the slack and i never had a problem since.

 

They're at about 10 o'clock as you face the wheel. I found it easier to get to by dropping the column just a bit, then while sitting in the driver seat you can look down the top of the column and see them easier and reach around under to adjust

 

See that's exactly what I did but it jus wouldn't work for me. So I took Tonys advice and cut a little piece of a metal rod like the one on the column and slipped it in there and problem solved.
