Battery or Charging System?

I searched about similar issues, but it seems like these things can be pretty hit or miss. My problem is that I just bought a new battery and it worked fine for several days. I took it to the garage and was swapping out a CTS sensor and trying to adjust the timing and what not. Well at the end of the day, the battery was dead. I jumped it off with a charger and it started right away.

Well every since that day the battery hasn't been able to hold a charge. I have a power master alternator and noticed it smoking one day when I had the car running. I put the old alternator back in, but it still doesn't hold a charge.

When I put it on a load tester it tests out fine and the car continues to run when I take off the negative cable. When I use the jumper to start the car it starts almost immediately. I tried to jump it with my other car tonight, it wouldn't start for nothing. It was trying, but it sounded like it was fighting real hard to turn the engine over; even after 10 min of charging.

I've had some recent fuel problems, but I think that I got that solved!! I am not sure what is going on, but maybe someone can give me some hints.

Thanks guys!

Call Roto-Rotor

Check for a battery drain problem.

Sometimes the under-hood or hatch light does not go out so check those easy ones first.

Then connect an ammeter in series with the battery.

If there is more than 50 milliamps there is excessive draw.

(You can use a small bulb such as a side marker bulb if you don‘t have an ammeter.)

Disconnect the alternator wires to see if it’s the problem.

With everything turned off and doors closed observe the current flow.

Pull the fuses one at a time, including the pump fuse near the battery, till you see the current drop.

That’s the circuit with the problem.

Happy Racing!

Re: Call Roto-Rotor

Hey I appreciate it. This is basically what I am doing. I had another tester hooked up to the battery and it said that it was bad. I will return the battery. I noticed today that I had a weak spark; instead of being blue it was yellow? I think I tested it right.

This is a problem that I think is tied to my setup not running right. When I try to crank it with the charger it starts, but won't idle and skips really bad. I know I am getting fuel so I am thinking it has something to do with the ignition. Hopefully I can track down these demons and get this thing cruising!!
