Headlight wiring... How do I wire my headlights to a toggle switch?

If I get a high amp toggle, can I wire my headlights to a toggle on my dash? I am using a lot of custom dash stuff so I don't want to use the standard GM light switch with turn style thing. I also want to wire my parking lights to another switch, also high amp.

You think this is possible? My entire car is wired with a painless kit for a hot rod.

Much better to use a relay.

Maybe , but that is not how it " should " be done and not good wiring practice.
As Apeiron states above, you use the toggle to operate a relay which sends battery power direct to lights.Less voltage drop because power has direct path to lights; brighter lights

Agreed with them. Once upon a time i wired my colant fans directly with a toggle switch. After the 3rd switch melted I learned why and wired in a relay. Never had another issue until i removed the override system with the new engine

Thats fine. I was not talking about wheather or not to use a relay. I would of course use one. I was asking if anyone had done this type of thing.

I know how to wire it and how to setup the relays, I guess I just need to do the work now. Ugh....

It will clean up my wire install. i will post what my painless kit looks like mounted in my trunk when it is all done.

What do you mean same call wire. I know that one would be going to the light. The 12 V. Then the lights can be grounded to the car. The relay gets a ground and 12V, and then there are two wires that go to the switch. Something like that.

Which is the call wire?

Re: Headlight wiring... How do I wire my headlights to a toggle switch?

Looks interesting. Can you explain a bit more.

Why the need for the relays? Is it for the H4s? I don't know anything about aftermarket lights. Do you need relays for the lights due to higher output?

Do those 3 wires go back to the dash light?

Just trying to get all the details down pat so I don't mess anything up.

Without relays, you need to run heavy high-current wires all the way back to the interior to a high-current switch. The relay lets you use lighter wire to a lighter switch, and keep the high-current stuff to a minimum.

yes I can explain

you dont have to do it with relays, but stock the current goes trough the switch on your dash that means that 10A or even more, will go trough that switch on your dash trough 1mm^2 wires WITHOUT A FUSE ANYWHERE.
with the help of relays the current goes trough the relays under my hood, and each relay can handle 30 Amps.
trough my dash switch there is only 0,1A going trough when a relay switches on. with a max of 0,4A with 4 relays. also the lights are now fused with a fuse only 1m away from the battery. if something would go wrong now, the fuse will make shure I dont get any fires.
last but not least, al the wires I used are 2,5mm^2 I have 0 voltage drop on my lights.

Do those 3 wires go back to the dash light?

yes
the dimlightwire and highbeam wire where actually the ones comin from the switch going to the lamps. I just cut them back and used those 2 wires for switching the relays.

the third wire is from my foglights, I dont have fog lights anymore but I do have the switch. so I used that switch. the third wire comes from that switch.

Just trying to get all the details down pat so I don't mess anything up.

how does it work when I put on my dimlights, only the outer dimlights go on.

when I put the highbeams on, the outer dimlighs go out and the hinner highbeams go on.

if I press my foglight switch the inner lowbeams go on.

if I press the foglightswitch and the dimlightswitch, all 4 lowbemas will be on.

if I then click on highbeams I will hae 4 highbeams instead of 2.

edit: I noticed that if your gonna use the original switches I made an error.
if your gonna run new wires and new switches yourself you will be fine with this diagram.

Re: Headlight wiring... How do I wire my headlights to a toggle switch?

Problem is I am not running origional anything. No origional wire, or anything.

I am buy high amp toggles, no big deal. I can also run relays, also no big deal. I have wired the entire car from scratch pretty much.

I want one toggle to turn on the dome light. one to turn on the parking lights. and one to turn on the headlights. I still want to use the lever on the column to switch the high beams on and off.

Since I am not running stock wires it is hard to ask for advice....

nope, then the wiring I posted earlyer will be OK only thing you need extra are the 3 switches ( lowbeams/highbeam/ extra lights )and a 12V wire that powers those.

it really aint very difficult.

What are you saying, "nope" about?

Why do you say I need three switches? You saying I can't run the lever in the column for high beams?

ofcours you can, everything is possible, but you still need a third switch for your parklights
