Turn signal issues

New to the board.

I recently purchased a 1987 Iroc Camaro. After purchasing it I did some checking and found that the front right turn signal was burned out. It was causing the right arrow light inside the car to come on every time I hit the brakes. So I went to Walmart, purchase a 2057A bulb and went home and put it in. Checked it and it worked fine. Later that night, I went to take the car for a spin, and when I clicked the headlights on, the right turn signal light comes on and stays on. I got out of the car and looked around and my right rear turn signal light is on and stays on, and it appears the front is doing the same. It won't flash when I turn the turn signal on.

It only does this when the headlights are on. When they are off, both turn signals light up and function normally. I've tried another 2057A and it does the same thing. Now the bulb socket has some corrosion inside there. Could that be causing it? Where do I begin my trouble shooting process?

Hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction. I've searched the forums but nothing I found was my problem exactly. Thanks in advance.

Brian

Re: Turn signal issues

You might try cleaning the socket of corrosion and checking the turn sig wiring for any sign of the insulation being broken or nicked that might cause a short to ground. Sounds like your getting battery but the turn sig relay isnt able to complete the flash cycle for that particular lamp.

Re: Turn signal issues

Alright, my brother in law tore into the car last night. Its had some electrical "rework" done to it. Now gotta find electrical schematics and redo the wiring.

Can someone tell me, are the sidemarker lights supposed to flash with the turn signals?

Mine do, not sure if that is the case for all years though.

Re: Turn signal issues

Brian, check your rear tail/brake bulbs. I've seen the wrong bulbs and even the right bulbs installed wrong. The reason I say that is when you hit your brakes your indicator comes on in dash. That's a sign that the problem is in the rear. No brake lights on front.

Re: Turn signal issues

Yep, the wrong bulb was installed in the rear. Some on installed a 1156 in the rear instead of the 2057 that it calls for. They had rewired the rear turn signal to the front sidemarker light because the factory wiring had died. I guess the problem must be in the turn signal switch or a break in the wiring somewhere along the way. I was forced to wire it back up the way they had it til i can trace the issue.

Thanks for all your help. I guess the next step is to find out where the turn signal switch is (steering column perhaps) and see if there is power coming out of it. If so I've got a broken wire to the rear.

Re: Turn signal issues

You have to pull the steering wheel off to get to it. You'll need the tool to take off the lock plate as well.

Re: Turn signal issues

I finally got the car back out and took it apart. I was trouble shooting the rear signal and I guess it had a loose connection under the dash because when I reassembled it, it worked perfectly. So glad to have that out of the way. Was really worried about it. Also the brake light on that side had the wrong bulb in it as well, and was causing ALL kinds of crap. Its amazing what such little things can do. thanks for the help.

Re: Turn signal issues

For the future - here's wiring diags if you need: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

There's a ton of 1992 stuff, but alot of the 'basics' will be the same between the years (like lights, cruise, hatch, etc.).
