There is only one sending unit, it's in the drivers side head between exhaust ports 1 & 3. The one for the ECM is a sensor. Tha coolant temp sensor is located under the throttle body, in the front of the manifold on a TPI.

Is the gauge sweeping during crank ? (full hot)

Re: temp guage not moving

It may have moved on to a better place then.
When you start the motor (crank), the gauge should ground, through the ignition switch, causing it to shoot up to full temp.

With the key on, ground the single green sender wire to anything ('clean' metal). If you still get nothing, full temp, then the gauge may be finished. A new sending unit won't fix the problem.

Re: temp guage not moving

Just came back to this thread, suddenly after resetting my ecm my guage now spikes when i crank the engine but it only goes to 100 and never moves up from there. Where is the temp sending unit and how will i know if its no good or even there?

Re: temp guage not moving

Try hitting your dashboard in the area above your temp gauge a couple of good times. When my temp gauge stopped moving 2 years ago I thought it was the sending unit's fault. Turns out hitting the dashboard fixed it!

With the engine OFF, but key in the RUN position, at the engine jump the temperature sender wire to ground.

If jumping causes the gage to peg replace the sensor.

Vanna, He Needs To Buy A Few Periods.

There might be a short in the sender line.

With the engine OFF and key in the OFF position, use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance from the temp sender to ground.

It’s a
dark green wire.

The temperature gage sender is located on the left, below the valve cover, on most VINS.

What is the resistance?

Re: temp guage not moving

Hello, the temp gauge wire on my car is missing. I,m trying to reconnect it, but i cannot find where to reattach it. I found a green wire going to the horn, a green wire that runs through a relay on the fire wall, it has a brown/white wire coming from it which has been cut, and finally I have a light green wire which runs down the firewall towards the transmission. The gauge in the car is pegged to the top. I really didn't want to have to unhook the bulk head to find the F5 pin. any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

The gage pegged is consistent with the dark green wire being shorted to ground.

If you can’t handle it at the firewall connector you can disconnect the present
dark green wire from the dash, then run a new one to the sender, by drilling a hole, using a grommet, and passing thru the wire.
