My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
I have a 91 RS 305 TBI that is having problems. about 2 weeks ago I went out one morning to get ready to go to work (4 AM PST) and my Car wouldn't crank, I thought it was the after market alarm that was installed before I bought the car so I had my car towed to the Local Shop to have it pulled by a certified installer dude. After he pulled it and got my wires back to stock(ish) looking it started up just fine, I noticed the my third brake light wasn't coming on so I checked and none of my brake lights wasn't lighting up, I took the car to my mechanic he got down and fiddled with the brake light module he said it was just sticking and he got my brake light back to working order. I started my car with no problem and drove it around for a while then I took it home and parked it for about an hour, I went back out to try to start it and it was showing the same symptoms it did when I had the alarm installed. my mechanic came out with a push button and he had it cranking over but wouldn't actually start. he doesn't understand and neither do I.
Today, I found out how to get my Codes and my car is throwing out Code 53 & 54....I am lost, I like this Camaro...
Short story: Car wouldn't crank over, Had Aftermarket Alarm removed, Drove for a few hours, Brake lights wasn't working, Mechanic fixed, drove home, let car sit for an hour, went to start it and wouldn't crank, I can hear fuel pump prime.
Could it be VATS I been reading about on this Forum? I cant find the wire to do the resistor bypass (my Key is #3) and there isn't a good picture to show me what to mess with and I don't want to start hacking at random wires...
I replaced the Starter, the starter enable relay, fuel Pump, alternator, All my Fuses with the correct amperage and bought a new air freshener...all within the last month.
I enclosed a Video of what Codes My Car is throwing:

Re: My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
CODE 53
This code will be set when the ignition is "ON", and the engine RPM is greater than 800 and the ECM is seeing a ignition fuel reference voltage of more than 17.1 volts. During the time of this failure, all ECM outputs will be disengaged.
Possible causes include:
1. Faulty alternator
2. Faulty ECM.
CODE 54
Trouble Code 54 indicates a low voltage at the fuel pump. If the voltage at terminal "A20" is less than 4 volts for .4 seconds since the last reference pulse was received, the code will be set.
Possible causes include:
1. Faulty fuel pump relay.
2. Faulty connection at ECM.
3. Faulty oil pressure switch.
4. Faulty ECM.

Re: My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
that link is somewhat helpful, but I am more of a Visual Person.
To quote the VATS malfunction and bypass:
"Remove the panel under the dash and look for a pair of yellow wires coming from the steering column and leading to a connector a short distance away."
I don't have a pair of Yellow wires to a connector I have 1 yellow wire
IF I had 2 yellow wires that would be awesome. Also, I just noticed there is 2 wires connected together as in my following picture, what do they do and are they supposed to look like that?

It's the Orange wire, which is actually a sleeve with two small white wires enclosed. If you follow it down it will lead to a small plug.

Re: My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
Yep, that's it. Looks like someone already did the VATS bypass. Down around the bottom of the steering column somewhere there should be two wires,a purple with white stripe and a white with black or purple stripe wire that come out with a small connector on the end. It may have the other side of the connector plugged into it with some wiring and other stuff(resistors, tape, etc) attached. That's where it is being bypassed and could have great or bad connections. Good luck

Re: My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
THe orange wire coming from the Steering column has no other end
and I traced the Purple w/white stripe wire all the way under the dash and lost it. should I pull my dash apart to trace the purple wire? I can't find the other end of the orange wire to an "connector" either.

I bypassed the Starter Relay and I got my car cranking over, but I am not getting Fuel to my injectors....Still a VATS issue? anyone?

Re: My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
Look at post #7 again, I think someone cut off the connector and put a stupid butt connector there.
Get a multimeter and get the resistance of your key
Get a resistor that is equivalent
Cut off the butt connector and attach the resistor between the two wires
Try to start it
Check out the pics here:

I dont own a VATS car and never done the bypass, but from what others have posted, this just might be it.

I have a button to start my car so vats does not bother me lol tbi chips lets you order the aftermarket chips with vats disabled so it does not cause a problem.

Re: My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
You can just buy a G2 adapter from Moates.net and slap a EPROM in the Burn2 and disable the VATS in Tunerpro.
$104 for a custom chip
vs
G2 Adapter $30.00
27SF512 Chip $ 5.00
Burn2 Programmer $85.00
Total $125.00
So for a few bucks more you can have the tools to bypass the vats and also tune the car in the future. Should you decide to start data logging, you can buy a ALDL cable and get a cheap laptop.

Re: My car is throwing Code 53 and 54
Sorry about the non-response, I been working way too much. I have Attached the Resistor and it clicked right over. What stumped me is that I driven the car for a day or two without a resistor between the wires. I have now a working car. I want to say thank you and I really appreciate the help.
I have added a video of it starting up for the first time in 3 weeks:

With the parts you have replaced shouldn't be getting those codes
