86 Trans Am Headlights Not Flipping Up..... PLEASE HELP!!!!!

ok got this car about 2 years ago and since ive had it the headlights have never came up by the switch i would always have to pop the hood and manually twist them up.... Well this was not a daily driver so i never really thought twice about it, but my other car just bit the dust so my trans am has to be my daily driver for a few months until i can get another car, now im trying to nip this annoying problem in the butt...... I tried jumping them straight from the battery when i did the drivers side the light just came up but wouldnt go back down with the swith i had to twist it back down and when i jumped the passengers side the **** that you twist to bring light up just started to twist really fast but the light never came up..... Does this sound like my headlight motors are bad?? and if not what are some suggestions of stuff to look for first???

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the headlight module terminal 1A yellow wire, then 1C brown wire, to see if they get power when you turn the headlights on.

The headlight module is a rectangular unit about 3" x 4" mounted in a bracket on the left side of the firewall.

Here is the Headlight Control Module. If it dies? The lights come on, but not up.

You can open it up, look inside & see if it has gotten dirty inside, broken traces....anything wrong inside.

Is that under the hood????......, and I also noticed that my high beams don't go off they just stay on, could that be tied in with the problem with the headlights??

Yes. That is on the firewall, just to the right of the engine. The mount stays in place & the Module itself slides out. To the right, IIRC.

I *think* it could have something to do with your Highs staying on too. I'd look inside it (4 screws hold the back plate on) & look.

I have those 3 relays too. Look about 6" to the left of them.

It is basically a dual-relay for the headlights. I know the early 'birds, 82-?, are different. If 87 was the first year for the single "dual-relay" module, you'll hafta find a 82-86 'bird owner to find out the wiring/setup from.

'90will be like my 87, but as mentioned above.....Not sure when they switched the wiring from 1 relay for both headlights, to the dual, like mine.

The dual was created so that even if 1 went out, the car would still have 1 useable headlight.

The 86 TA relays for the headlight actuators are on the front fenders one is on the LH side in front of the radiator overflow canister, the other one is on the RH side in front of the windshield washer canister.
Looking down from the front of the car.
Hope that helps you out!

I really think you have a fuse problem, check for a bad fuse, and if it is good, check the fusible links D,E and G,they are located at the front light harness near the LH radiator shroud.check to see if any of them are broken first. They look like a thin wire going into a fatter wire,in between them is a fat piece of insulation.
It's not likely that two relays go at the same time.

We are talking headlights, I'm looking at my chilton book and it doesn't show a fuse on the fuse block that's for the headlights

The headlight switch has a built in circuit breaker, does your lights come on and your doors stay closed.

Re: 86 Trans Am Headlights Not Flipping Up..... PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Their is a test to do for that, but you have to locate the Isolation relay, the manual says it is RH front of engine compartment near the cruise control servo, but I can't find mine either.so maybe someone will tell us where it is.I can't see it's to dark and cold out.

Re: 86 Trans Am Headlights Not Flipping Up..... PLEASE HELP!!!!!

It's pretty simple, use a tester, with the light switch off ground the yellow wire it should not light, turn the switch on and it should be hot, then ground the white wire with the switch off and it should be hot, turn the switch on and it should be hot, then you ground the dk.blue&white with the switch off and it should be hot, then you ground the pink with the switch off and it's not hot, then turn the switch on and it should be hot, then you ground the dk.blue with the switch off and it should be hot, then you ground the black with the switch off and it's not hot then turn the switch on and it's not hot.
If the voltage at the yellow is not correct check the light switch.
If the voltage is not present at the white on off check the tail fuse and light switch.
If voltage is present at the black it's faulty ground.
If other voltages are not correct replace the Isolation Relay
