Alternator

I have a 1987 pontiac trans am 350 tpi 5.7 and the alternator is bad...i was wondering what amp alternator to go with...i found one on JEGS. would this one be good? http://www.jegs.com/i/Powermaster/713/37860/10002/-1

and how do you tell if your alternator is a right mount or left mount or staight mount?

This has been covered a few times.

Your local parts store carries them usually with a lifetime warranty. I'm still using the Autozone 105 Lifetime warranty one on my car.

If you're looking for a little more of bump in charging take a look at this one. It's suppose to provide 105 amp at idle and 200 amps at 1200 rpms.

This page shows each alternator with the years underneath. I would guess 87-88, 88-89, and 90-92 used different mounting styles on the bracket.

I also prefer a local auto parts store for something like alternator. I bought a new one last April, it was overcharging in Aug, had them test it to verify, and it was simple 5 minute exchange because of the lifetime warranty - I swapped right there in the parking lot, took me 10 minutes. Didn't even have a receipt, they had me in their computer. Can't get that from internet/mail order!
