Wipers only work when engine is off!

See second post for more info!

So about last summer my wipers started acting wonky, they would stop working when it rained except on the fastest setting, or when I just want a single wipe, but all the timed setting inbetween would not work.

This summer it does the same but even when its dry outside. If I put it to the slowest timed setting I see the wipers move a little bit upward as if they are getting into position, but they never actually start, not a single setting works except when I get to the end to the fastest setting.

So I got manual and fastest settings but nothing inbetween. I've had a look at the fuses but I don't see anything broken. I think the issue might be somewhere else entierly, since it seemed to be caused by moisture originally.

Re: Troubleshooting wonky wipers (91 GTA)

Gonna bump this because here's a twist for you! The wipers work! As long as the engine isn't running, just turn on the ignition but not the engine and for some reason the wipers work as they should.

Now I am really clueless as to whats going on, but it seems I can rule out the stalk itself.

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

well if you look under the hood there should be a black box connected to the wipers it has 3 torx screws loosen the torx screws with the engine running and the wipers on low or any setting and see if they start moving mine does the same but in mine the high and mist don't do crap all the lows i had to adjust the screws to get it to work.

Thanks I'll see about that. Someone else told me it might be a relay.

Got the same problem with my GTA. I suspect that it is a grounding problem, but I have not done much TS yet.

it could be a relay that is possible but i would check the wiper box before doing any major stuff it is really easy access

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

I found that when I gave the wiper motor box a thwap, then the wipers would start working. It's totally random though when they are working and not, so the problem is in the wiper motor box, the connections to it seems perfectly fine.

Still even when all the delays now work, the mist function doesn't work. I can't say why that is but I hope it's the wiper motor box, I suppose it's gonna have to come off.

The wipers also stopped working as they should when only the ignition is on now. I don't really know why that is either. I just did a fuel injector swap though.

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

removed the wiper motor and had a look. Everything inside looks fine, as do the connections. I'm guessing faulty pulse board.

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

I had the same experience. I swapped out the board, and it was no different. At present, my alternator is not putting out very well, and I am starting to wonder if it is a voltage problem... but it could also be those leaf contacts that connect the board to the motor.

I hope to find some time this weekend to play with this some more (after I replace my alternator)

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

I gave the leaf contacts a polishing and bended them up a bit to make sure they connected, no difference. My alternator is new however.

Could it perhaps be faulty grounds?

Anyone know what possible causes this can have? It would help alot not to search blind!

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

I had also suspected a bad ground, especially since my wiper motor seems to 'float' a bit on its mounts. I haven't had time to play with it.

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

TS today revealed that there is no ground problem. I finally removed the wiper motor and installed a used replacement (the motor that I got the control board from -- I put it back).

The replacement wiper motor works perfectly.

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

I have also replaced the motor now and the delays all work again as they should. I still don't have a mist function though, when I rotate the **** to mist all it does is activate the wipers, but no fluid is pumped. If I use the other paddle though then that will activate the wipe & mist cycle. It just doesn't work when I rotate the ****.

Any ideas?

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

well in my 88 you have to press the tab away from you to make it work so idk, i also i need to put a new motor in, the high wipers work only when they feel like it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GQsVb4RZbk

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

I press the tab away from me yes. That works. But there's also the **** itself where you set the delay, you can pull that the other way to engage the mist that way as well. That bit alone is whats not working.

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

Could anyone tell me where the wiper washer switch assembly is? Also where is the battery fuse?

Could a relay be the culprit here perhaps?

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

Well I am stumped. I can only think its the switch itself now and thats a PITA to change.

Re: Wipers only work when engine is off!

Apparently the multi function lever is a far easier replacement maybe worth a shot in the dark to get one of those and see if that helps...
