speedometer needle at wrong position?

Hello,

i disassembled my speedometer for cleaning (89' Trans Am).
i put off the needle from the axle but did not notice the position of the needle on the axle and the tacho-plate.
now the needle shows approximately 30 km/h too low.

are there any markers to adjust the needle in the right way?

Hope i illustrated it understandable and you can help me out of this mess...

Thanks!

best regards, Andreas

Speed Reading

You can use GPS.

Using GPS and driving at a steady speed,
(higher speeds will give you better resolution) let’s say 80MPH, use a Sharpie to mark 12:00 on the axel.

Then when you return home you can turn the post by hand to 12:00 and install the needle.

There are other ways to accomplish this, for example using a signal generator, which we can elaborate if requested.

Re: speedometer needle at wrong position?

i do not understand 12:00 on the axle...

for example:
i drive with steady speed of 80mph on the gps signal. the speedometer-needle shows lets say 55mph.
then i dissassemble the cluster, turn the needle to 55mph, hold the mechanic (magnet etc...) behind the tacho-plate on this position and turn the needle up to 80mph and fix it on the axle?

is that the right procedure?

What Time Is It ?

12:00 refers to the highest point on the axel.

Also the way you mentioned in your second post will also work.

If when traveling at 80MPH VIA GPS, the speedometer shows only 55MPH, you now know how much you must move the needle.
