Engine Wont Turn Over/Electrical Wiring

I have a 91' SS Camaro and about 4 weeks ago I was driving down the block and it chug-a-lugged and died like it ran out of gas. I put 2 gallons in and it wouldn't turn over. It would start to but it wouldn't fire. I'm on my 4th mechanic now, and all I've gotten out of the last 3 was that it was the electrical wiring to my fuel pump. When gas is manually brought to the pump it runs so that is ruled out. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TGO!

What exactly do you mean "Manually brought to the pump"?

Was the gauge reading empty when the car died?

Have you swapped the fuel filter yet?

To be honest that's what the mechanic told me. He said when he manually put fuel in the pump it works. My fuel gauge still said I had a little over an 8th. No I didn't swap out the fuel filter.

Re: Engine Wont Turn Over/Electrical Wiring

Given that the pump is inside the tank, unless your "mechanic" removed the exhaust, rear axle, and gas tank .... there's no way he "manually brought fuel to the pump". He might have dumped some fuel into the TBI unit to get it to crank.

When you turn on the key, you should hear the fuel pump 'whine' for about 2 seconds (priming the system). Might have to have someone else turn on the key while you place ear against hump in trunk and listen for it. If you don't hear it, then the pump is not working. If this is the case ...

1) check the fuse under the hood by the battery - might be tucked up in fender by battery - single fuse in a holder, orange wire and a red wire go to it - 20 amp fuse.

2) check the fuel pump relay - driver side on firewall between brake booster and fender, there is a bracket attached to firewall with 2 10mm screws, has 2 relays on the inner side of the bracket, one is fuel pump, one is fan (the fan relay has a large black w/red stripe wire to it) - swap the two relays and listen for pump again - if it works, then relay needs replaced.

3) under car, driver side, just above the oil filter, is the oil pressure sending unit, has 3 wires to it - might try replacing it if 1 & 2 don't work.

4) if all that fails to make the pump run, might be bad wiring to pump or a bad pump. As mentioned, gas tank has to be dropped to replace the fuel pump (as well as rear axle and exhaust) ... unless you cut an access panel in the trunk floor to get to it.

BTW - there is no such thing as a SS car in the 3rd generation of F-bodys - there are SC's (Sport Coupes), Berlinetta's, Z-28's, and RS's (Rally Sports) .... but there was never an SS (Super Sport) car. Might have SS badges on it (available anywhere to buy and swap), but there was no SS Camaro from 1982 - 1992.
