starter compatibility question
Hello all,
Luckily it's been a while since I needed help with my car.
The latest issue is with my starter. I want to replace my faulty starter with
a smaller version.
I googled information and it lead me to a camaro forum that stated a starter
from 93'-97' will also fit 82'-92' thirdgens.
My question is to verify if that is true???
The forum stated that the 93'up version is smaller and would fit into the spot
easily without having to remove the y-pipe.
Need responses asap as my starter won't last much longer and I would like to
fix it by next weekend. Don't want to get stranded any where with my 2 year
old in the car.
Thanks.

Re: starter compatibility question
Because he has headers, or a high compression engine, or he's tired of the Chevy solenoid heat problem.
I have run Lt1 starters and had good luck with them. Need to make sure yours is a 153-tooth flexplate (make sure the starter bolts line up, and are not offset).

Re: starter compatibility question
Go to Jegs, can get a High torque mini, will fit either size flywheel for about$140, suckers work great....

Re: starter compatibility question
The bolt pattern is offset.
The other thing was I didn't know if it is 153 tooth or the other. How can you tell?
Yes I am tired of the heat solenoid problem and I will be getting headers shortly after christmas and since I have stater problems now, might as well get one that will accommodate having headers.
Was looking at the mini starters from jegs and summit, will have to revisit those sites.
Thanks for the responses.
Added info: 90 gta w/ 5.7 350.

Re: starter compatibility question
Offset bolt pattern = 168 tooth flywheel, so someone must have swapped an older engine into your car. You need a mini-starter, LT1 will not work.

Re: starter compatibility question
Slight error on my part as when I looked at my starter I mistook the long and
short bolt holes as being offset.
I had my car in the air today and observed that the holes are lined up and
are NOT offset as seen in the pic above.
That being said, the 93 and up starter will fit my gta right?

Re: starter compatibility question
Yes, LT1 starter will work and will be an improvement in power, size and crank speed. You could use an LT4 starter as well.
