Fuel gauge accuracy

Hey guys, just got my first third gen and am wondering how accurate the fuel gauges are, particularly where "empty" truly is. Is the "E" line really emtpy or is there another gallon or two below it? In the datsun i've been driving for 2 years there was a good 50 miles of fuel below the E line. Thanks!

Our fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate. You might consider a search for more info.

Re: Fuel gauge accuracy

I'll tell you this, I ran out of gas in the driveway the other day with what it showed to be almost a 1/4 tank (just below it). Luckily I had a 5 gallon can here and filled it to go get gas. I didn't even think it could have been out.
I'm used to my Silverado that I can drive another 50-60 miles with the line below "E".
Don't trust 'em. Depends on how well the float was adjusted.

Re: Fuel gauge accuracy

This is why I use my trip meter in conjunction with the fuel gauge.

Having it in the tank does not mean the pickup can actually reach it. Example being Ive ran a 3rd gen out of gas with 3 gallons left in the tank

Re: Fuel gauge accuracy

thats why i run aftermarket gauges. stock gauges are all over the board as far as accuracy goes. i know for a fact with my autometer fuel gauge, then it hits E, ive got about whats left in the bowls before it dies.

Re: Fuel gauge accuracy

I've been pretty lucky so far. I find that once it hits the orange section, you're in trouble. Fuel pump humming. Gotta pull over at the next station immediately. When it's a bit higher and on the empty sign, you can hear the pump hum on hard stops (fuel sloshing forwards)

What I don't like is that the gas gauge can move by 1/4 when coming to a stop. And then once you move again, it will move by 1/4 higher. The moving amount seems to be the true measure of fuel in my car.

And even with the car humming and bucking and stuttering, I STILL can't get more than 13 gallons into the car. Majority of the time if I'm low on gas, I'll get 11 gallons, maybe 12 gallons if it's really low. The 13 gallon was a one time only deal when I was in the middle of nowhere, praying for a gas station to appear.
