Starter Wiring Problems

whats up guys, so I have 89 camaro rs TPI 5.0. I just recently bought the car as a restoration project and to get my hands on experiencing on working on cars. The knowledge I have about cars is very minimal, but looking for some outside guidance. I been experiencing a shortage to my starter. The car will start, but periodically will not start. All cabin lights work as well as headlights but will not turn over. The previous owner told me that they replaced the starter, but I feel that there might be some type of shortage to the starter. Im also looking for the wiring schematics for what wires are connected to the starter. I would greatly appriciate all comments and suggestions to resolve my problem, so Im not stuck in B.F.E walking home =/ Thanks.

Re: Starter Wiring Problems

if it has starting issues when the cars is warmed up, it could just be heat soak. if it happens even if the car is cold, it could just be that the wires on the starter are loose or corroded.

Re: Starter Wiring Problems

thanks!! I do notice the car wont turn over a lot after the car has warmed up and I've been driving for awhile. Like I stated before I'm a beginner at automotive mechanics, what and how do I determine that it is a "heat soak" problem?

Re: Starter Wiring Problems

drive the car until it gets nice and hot then kill it then try to start it again, if it doesnt start, or the start spins slowly, its probably heat soak. meaning the start solenoid is getting too hot to function properly. you can fix that by either getting a remote mount solenoid or a mini starter.

Re: Starter Wiring Problems

mini starter is a direct bolt in. you remove the wires from your starter, unbolt it and remove it. bolt the mini starter up, then bolt the wires back on. you can either get an aftermarket mini starter, or an LT1 starter from a 4th gen or vette.
