Repair Cigarette Lighter?

Can anyone direct me to a thread about repairing the cigarette Lighter?

Is there a specific brand/type of cigarette lighter that I should purchase, or can I just hit up my local Autozone.

I also have the service manual to my exact model if that makes anything easier for myself.
I have a 91 Z28 Camaro.

Any tips would be helpful, thanks.

You can just go to autozone and grab a new one.

Check to make sure you have voltage to the lighter socket first.

Re: Repair Cigarette Lighter?

Are you replacing the socket due to it blowing the ACC fuse? I've done it if there is any part you need info on. Just LMK, Henry

Re: Repair Cigarette Lighter?

I would like to note that you WILL NOT be able to directly plug in a new cigarette lighter from your local autoparts stores.

The stock cigarette lighter is terrible, and in order to fit a new style lighter, you need to cut the lighter plug off, and buy some blade terminal connectors and have a soldering iron handy.

The stock cigarette light looks something like this:

Buy some of these, and remove the yellow jacket off of it by cutting it off, but leave the crimping part:

This is the wrong style connector, but for demo purposes, this is what it looked like when I did it (left, but blade connector), then I soldered the crimped area to the wire AFTER it was crimped. (Ignore the right side picture)

And for the life of me, I cannot find an image of a new style cigarette lighter. But anyhow, I hope this leads you in the right direction.

You should have trouble finding that socket at your local part house. I have gotten a few of those from my local stores. They do suck though. And since your in there anyway, beef up the wiring for the socket especially if your going to power stuff off it. Seen guys smoke the stock wiring powering laptops.

i looked for over a year foe a working OE type so i didnt have to cut the wiring. but i can tell you that nothing on the aftermarket fits the mounting right or requires you to cut your wires.try hawks, theyre the best with small stuff like this

False. Don't overpay at hawks for a used lighter unless you wanting to "restore" your car.

I bought my cigarette lighter replacement at pepboys, spent a couple dollars on spade terminals. Cut/resoldiered, and everything works and imho looks better than the old one.

The older style cigarette lighters are terrible, bad design. The newer style is tapered more, and you have less problems with devices unplugging/coming loose.

no auto parts store anywhere carries a lighter for our cars.not the socket, not the element.and forget finding one that matches the rest of the *****.yes you could cobble something together.but do you really want to do that? it took me 18 months of searching for a OE lighter assy. the dealer is of no help either .you can find OE lighters online and IMHO they are the way to go

Re: Repair Cigarette Lighter?

My old lighter worked well enough but the socket looked rusty. Bought a new one that is identicle to the old(was probably replaced before since autozone had the same unit), but since I had to disassemble the new lighter to install it into the console I have. It been able to get it to work. First it blew a ACC fuse then the lighter once depressed seems to stay locked down in the cylinder shaft. Does anyone have any ideas?, or at least a diagram as to what goes where and in what order so I can reconnect it? The connectors on my harness already have the correct spade to just slip on. I'm sure a clip or screw isn't in the right place though.

Re: Repair Cigarette Lighter?

This thread helped me repair my corroded cigarette lighter socket that was blowing my 20 amp ACC fuse. I just bought two little blue connectors and some electrical tape. I cut the wires containing the plastic GM socket and spliced the two wires, both ground and hot with some extra wire for some more slack as mine had little to no slack what so ever. After I added slack I ran it back up through the bottom of the driver-side panel under the dash through the original accessories hole. I crimped the connectors to the wires and slipped the lighter socket onto the connectors and voila! New, non-corroded lighter socket that works with my FM transmitter. Thanks fellas!
